    测量恒星小尺度磁场是探究恒星磁活动起源、评估其潜在空间天气效应的关键。但长期以来,主流的恒星磁场测量方法(如塞曼多普勒成像)基本只能提供恒星全球性的大尺度磁场信息,无法分辨恒星黑子区域的小尺度磁场结构。
    在一颗名为AD Leo的活跃红矮星上,研究团队用FAST探测到一种极为特殊的射电暴,其信号频率变化速度高达8 GHz/s,远超以往在类似恒星上观测到的任何射电暴频率漂移速率。他们认为,要产生如此快速的频率漂移,辐射源必须来自一个磁场强度高且位置非常接近恒星表面的区域。结合对恒星磁场模型的分析,他们排除了大尺度磁场的可能性,确定信号来自黑子上方的小尺度磁场结构。
    该发现说明恒星黑子区域的磁活动能将电子加速到极高能量,这些电子在磁场中做回旋运动,产生独特的射电辐射。捕捉这些射电信号,就可以直接分析恒星表面小尺度的磁场结构。这为研究恒星磁活动的起源、理解恒星复杂的磁场结构提供了全新方法。
    FAST望远镜提供的高灵敏度和高时间、频率分辨率的观测是该工作成功的关键。以往的恒星射电观测时间分辨率大多在小时或分钟量级,较少有秒和亚秒级时间分辨率的观测,FAST观测将时间分辨率直接拓展到了亚毫秒级。开展亚毫秒分辨率的恒星射电观测对望远镜的灵敏度提出了极其严苛的要求,当前世界上其他射电望远镜基本都难以实现类似FAST的观测效果。田晖团队对M型恒星磁活动的观测开拓了基于FAST研究晚型恒星系统的新方向。
    目前,科研团队也在利用FAST观测开展对年轻类日恒星、褐矮星、恒星-行星相互作用过程的探索,这将进一步拓展我们对恒星磁活动及其驱动的系外空间天气现象的理解,为寻找系外宜居行星提供重要启示。
