电偶极子环用于描述铁轴性的方式,与用电流环描述永磁体(铁磁体)的方式类似。在低温条件下,电流环有序排列,形成具有宏观磁化的区域(磁畴),这些磁畴可在足够强的磁场作用下发生磁极翻转。在高温条件下,这些环路随机取向或持续涨落,导致磁化消失,材料转变为顺磁相。类似地,铁轴晶体表现出铁轴畴,并在高温下转变为顺轴相。然而,铁轴性与场的耦合方式同铁磁性有着本质区别:磁矩(电流环)会像磁场一样在时间反演下翻转方向,但轴矩(电偶极子环)则保持不变。因此,铁磁性会对磁场作出响应,而铁轴性则不会。轴向共轭场必须能够反映电偶极子环在时间反演下保持不变这一特性。
Zeng等向其顺轴相-铁轴相转变温度附近的典型铁轴晶体——二钼酸铁铷[RbFe(MoO4)2]发射圆偏振光短脉冲,以对其进行激发。光的电场被调谐至与晶体内部原子振动相同的频率(共振),随后的光脉冲测量了材料中铁轴序的强度与方向。在顺轴相中,光诱导产生的瞬态铁轴序仅持续1 ps(10-12 s);而在铁轴相中,当单脉冲能量(单位面积能量)超越阈值时,则可确定性地切换铁轴畴,且翻转状态能稳定维持数小时。通过施加相反圆偏振光脉冲,这些畴可恢复至原状态。这种场阈值与状态可逆性的特征,与铁磁性等铁序的行为模式高度一致。Zeng等的研究首次实现了对铁轴序的直接可控调控,证实了轴向共轭场的理论设想。
Zeng等报道的共轭场结合了离子与电子的运动。在圆偏振光的共振激发下,铁轴晶体中的电子与离子均做圆周运动,其中电子跟随光的电场运动,而离子运动则相对滞后。由此产生了2个相互垂直的循环电偶极子,共同构成了轴向共轭场。当调节光频偏离共振状态时,循环偶极子会趋于对齐,形成类磁场的电流环,从而抑制铁轴响应。
铁轴序的研究主要集中于多铁性材料,这类材料中铁电性与铁磁性等状态可共存并相互耦合。此前,铁轴性充当了连接铁电极化与手性磁织构之间的桥梁,实现了电场对磁状态的调控。Zeng等人的研究则将铁轴性从一种状态间的媒介提升为一种全新的可调控状态,且因其对常规场的低敏感性而具备优异鲁棒性。这一突破有望推动新型多功能材料的开发,使信息能够编码于电子、磁与铁轴性自由度之中。
目前仍存在若干关键挑战,包括厘清铁轴向切换的动力学过程、降低能耗需求以及缩小系统尺寸等。解决这些难题或需开发新型铁轴材料与共轭场,但直接操控铁轴序能力的实现,已为未来技术发展奠定了坚实基础。
