FAST, as a world-class radio telescope, has made significant achievements in many directions. However, with the increasing international competition, FAST's limitations are becoming more apparent. Therefore, we propose the FAST Phase II project, which aims to develop a low-cost and rapidly implementable array upgrading scheme. The plan is to build 24 40-meter aperture antennas within 5 kilometers around FAST by 2027 to form a synthetic aperture array with a sensitivity of 3600 square meters per Kelvin. By the end of 2030, another 40 antennas of the same aperture will be built within 30 kilometers to form the FAST Phase II, which will enhance the imaging capability and spatial resolution. The upgraded FAST will work in conjunction with other large fully steerable single-antenna telescopes in China to achieve a resolution of 15 milliarcseconds and a sensitivity of 6400 square meters per Kelvin, about twice that of ngVLA. The FAST Phase II project will not only improve the sensitivity but also enhance the high-resolution imaging capability, so as to significantly advance the cutting-edge research in time-domain astronomy, neutral hydrogen detection of distant galaxies, large-scale structure of the universe, dark energy, and other fields.

FAST作为世界顶级射电望远镜,虽在诸多方向取得重要成果,但FAST的局限性也日益显现。FAST二期工程概念的提出,旨在发展低成本、快速实施的阵列升级方案。计划到2027年,在FAST周边5 km内建设24台40 m口径天线,组网形成综合孔径阵列,灵敏度达到3600 m2/K;2030年底,在30 km内再建设40台同等口径天线,组成FAST二期,增强成像能力和空间分辨率。升级后的FAST将与国内其他大型全可动单天线联合工作,实现15 mas的分辨率和6400 m2/K的灵敏度,约为ngVLA的2倍。FAST二期工程不仅提升灵敏度,还将增强高分辨率成像能力,显著推进时域天文、遥远星系中性氢探测、宇宙大尺度结构、暗能量等前沿研究。

FAST作为世界顶级射电望远镜,虽在诸多方向取得重要成果,但FAST的局限性也日益显现。FAST二期工程概念的提出,旨在发展低成本、快速实施的阵列升级方案。计划到2027年,在FAST周边5 km内建设24台40 m口径天线,组网形成综合孔径阵列,灵敏度达到3600 m2/K;2030年底,在30 km内再建设40台同等口径天线,组成FAST二期,增强成像能力和空间分辨率。升级后的FAST将与国内其他大型全可动单天线联合工作,实现15 mas的分辨率和6400 m2/K的灵敏度,约为ngVLA的2倍。FAST二期工程不仅提升灵敏度,还将增强高分辨率成像能力,显著推进时域天文、遥远星系中性氢探测、宇宙大尺度结构、暗能量等前沿研究。

FAST, as a world-class radio telescope, has made significant achievements in many directions. However, with the increasing international competition, FAST's limitations are becoming more apparent. Therefore, we propose the FAST Phase II project, which aims to develop a low-cost and rapidly implementable array upgrading scheme. The plan is to build 24 40-meter aperture antennas within 5 kilometers around FAST by 2027 to form a synthetic aperture array with a sensitivity of 3600 square meters per Kelvin. By the end of 2030, another 40 antennas of the same aperture will be built within 30 kilometers to form the FAST Phase II, which will enhance the imaging capability and spatial resolution. The upgraded FAST will work in conjunction with other large fully steerable single-antenna telescopes in China to achieve a resolution of 15 milliarcseconds and a sensitivity of 6400 square meters per Kelvin, about twice that of ngVLA. The FAST Phase II project will not only improve the sensitivity but also enhance the high-resolution imaging capability, so as to significantly advance the cutting-edge research in time-domain astronomy, neutral hydrogen detection of distant galaxies, large-scale structure of the universe, dark energy, and other fields.

射电天文学始于20世纪30年代初,在过去的90年里为人类天文学的发展作出了诸多重要贡献。然而,中国的射电天文事业起步较晚,直到新中国成立后才逐步发展。受限于当时的经济基础和技术水平,国内的射电天文观测设备长期处于落后水平。1958年,中国第一个射电观测站在沙河建成,标志着中国射电天文事业的正式起步。此后,在老一代天文学家的不懈努力下,1984年密云米波综合孔径望远镜建成,之后青海德令哈13.7米毫米波射电望远镜、上海佘山25米射电望远镜和新疆南山25米射电望远镜相继建成,中国射电天文设备逐步发展。
进入21世纪,随着国家综合国力的提升,中国射电天文学迎来了快速发展的新时期,陆续建成了诸如“宇宙第一缕曙光”探测项目(21CMA)、上海65米天马望远镜,以及新一代射电日像仪和天籁阵列等一批现代化设备。现有射电天文观测站分布在北京、上海、南京、青海、新疆、云南、贵州和内蒙古等省区市,研究领域涵盖各学科天文课题。其中密云50 m、云南40 m、上海佘山25 m、天马65 m、乌鲁木齐南山25 m天线一起组成中国甚长基线干涉测量网(China Very Long Baseline Interferometry,CVN),为中国的探月和深空探测工程做出重要贡献。中国正在建设的新疆奇台110米和云南景东120米望远镜将成为世界上最大的全可动射电望远镜。这些已有和规划的射电天文设备观测所涉及的频率从米波到毫米波,从事的工作在基础研究、国家重大需求、经济发展和社会进步方面都有重大意义。
为进一步推动中国射电天文学的发展,国家发改委于2007年正式批复500米口径球面射电望远镜(Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical radio Telescope,FAST)项目[13],并于2016年9月竣工。作为全球最大的单口径射电望远镜,FAST的建成不仅标志着中国在这一领域的重大技术突破,也为未来10年内赶超国际领先水平提供了宝贵机遇。自2020年投入正式运行以来,FAST已在脉冲星[45]、快速射电暴(FastRadio Bursts,FRB)[6]、中性氢(HI)[7]及纳赫兹引力波[8]等领域取得了多项国际瞩目的原创性科学成果。
当前,国际射电天文学的发展正朝着更高的空间分辨率、更精细的谱线分辨率以及更高的灵敏度方向推进,以便探测到更暗弱、遥远的天体。虽然FAST在灵敏度上已领先于其他百米口径射电望远镜,其L波段系统灵敏度达到2600 m²/K,然而单口径望远镜的固有局限在分辨率和成像能力方面难以突破,这已成为制约中国在射电时域天文学、宇宙成分与演化研究以及引力波探测等前沿领域取得进一步突破的瓶颈。特别是在中国的爱因斯坦探针(EinsteinProbe,EP)、天基多波段空间变源监视器(SpaceVariable Objects Monitor,SVOM)等卫星探测到大量暂现源后,FAST由于缺乏高分辨率的成像能力,无法进行有效的后随观测,错失了对这些稍纵即逝的宇宙瞬态事件进行深度研究的机会。
目前,全世界主要厘米波射电干涉阵列如表 1所示。国际大科学计划如平方公里阵列射电望远镜(Square Kilometre Array,SKA)[9]和下一代甚大阵列(Next Generation Very Large Array,ngVLA)[10]相继启动,并计划于2029年和2035年分别完成其第一阶段的建设任务。SKA1包括建于南非的中频天线阵列(SKA1-Mid)和建于澳大利亚的低频孔径阵列(SKA1-Low)。SKA1-Mid包括新建133面反射面天线以及在建SKA先导单元MeerKAT的64面反射面天线。SKA1的灵敏度预计将达到1560 m²/K,而ngVLA的灵敏度预计将达到3014 m²/K,这对FAST的性能优势提出了严峻挑战。
射电天文的科学潜力极为广泛,从宇宙初期的混沌、原星系与星系团、星系的形成与演化、暗物质与大尺度结构、活动星系核(active galactic nucleus,AGN)现象、星际介质与磁场,到银河系及邻近星系中的恒星天体,甚至太阳系内的灾变事件,射电波段的研究均在这些领域发挥着不可替代的作用。国外推动的这些大型射电阵列项目,正是瞄准了上述科学领域的巨大研究潜力。因此,面对日益激烈的国际竞争,提出FAST二期工程,通过建设FAST核心阵[11]进一步升级FAST以提升其分辨率和成像能力(图 1),使中国在射电天文学领域长期保持国际领先地位。
FAST工程二期的目标是建设基于FAST的射电干涉阵列(FAST核心阵),以提升现有的空间分辨率和成像能力,保持其在灵敏度方面的国际领先地位。FAST核心阵将对多种前沿科学问题做出重要贡献,特别是通过对宇宙大尺度结构、星系演化、脉冲星和FRB、黑洞以及生命起源的深入研究,推动天文学与基础物理学的发展。具体科学目标如下。
1)宇宙大尺度结构与HI巡天。
宇宙中的大尺度结构是理解宇宙演化的关键。HI 21厘米线是探测宇宙大尺度结构和再电离时期的重要工具。FAST核心阵通过高灵敏度的21厘米谱线观测,研究重子声波振荡(baryon acoustic oscillations,BAO)和红移空间畸变(redshift-space distortions,RSD)等效应,精确测量宇宙膨胀速度,探索暗能量的本质。这将揭示宇宙从“黑暗时代”向“光明时代”的过渡历史,提供宇宙结构在不同红移处的演化信息,并检验暗能量和引力模型。
2)星系动力学与星系演化。
HI是星系的基础组成部分,FAST核心阵将通过对星系旋转曲线和气体分布的精细测量,揭示星系内部的暗物质分布及其演化。观测高红移星系中的HI含量及其空间分布,填补现有对z > 0.5星系气体观测的空白,帮助理解星系形成的初始条件和演化过程。广域巡天能力将提供大规模统计样本,结合多波段观测,推动星系演化研究的重大突破。
3)脉冲星研究。
脉冲星搜寻和计时观测是当前时域天文学的重要前沿。FAST已经发现了超过900颗脉冲星,未来FAST核心阵将进一步扩大脉冲星样本库,尤其是在50 kpc范围内的毫秒脉冲星。通过对低光度、远距离脉冲星的系统性观测,能够揭示不同类型脉冲星的物理特性和中子星的演化过程。此外,脉冲星—黑洞双星系统的发现将为强引力场下的广义相对论检验提供新的机会,并通过精确测量脉冲到达时间,探测引力波的发射机制。
4)FRB探测。
FRB是一类神秘的天体现象,具有极短的爆发时标和巨大的射电能量。FAST在FRB的探测上取得了重要进展,二期项目将进一步致力于揭示FRB的物理机制。通过对大量FRB的精确定位和系统观测,确定重复暴与非重复暴的差异,研究FRB与持续射电源的关联性,并增加高红移FRB的观测数量。利用FRB作为宇宙学探针,研究宇宙重子物质的分布和宇宙膨胀历史,提供对宇宙学参数的精确测量。
5)星际介质探索。
星际介质是研究星系结构与演化的关键。FAST核心阵将利用高角分辨率和高灵敏度的射电观测,深入研究银河系和近邻星系HI的分布与运动。通过揭示星际介质的精细结构,如冷气体的丝状结构和恒星反馈效应,二期项目将对星系演化的物理模型提供重要限制。
6)AGN与黑洞研究。
AGN是宇宙中最明亮的天体之一,由超大质量黑洞驱动。FAST核心阵将通过对AGN喷流结构的高分辨率观测,研究黑洞吸积与喷流产生机制,揭示黑洞周围等离子体的物理过程。这将帮助理解AGN的演化及其与星系环境的相互作用。
7)生命起源与地外文明探索。
除了地球上的生命,宇宙中是否存在其他生命和文明是科学研究的重要前沿。FAST核心阵将继续搜寻系外行星的射电辐射,探测系外行星系统的磁活动,研究其宜居性。同时,项目还将显著提升对地外文明信号的探测能力,进行更广泛和更灵敏的搜寻,增加发现外星文明的可能性。
充分利用FAST周围良好的电磁环境,建设一个具备超高灵敏度和高角分辨率的混合口径干涉阵列,成本低且可快速实施。这将极大提升中国在射电天文学领域的时域、频域和空间尺度上的探测、精确定位及成图能力,并有望在脉冲星、HI、AGN、引力波、FRB及系外行星探测等领域取得重大突破,进一步巩固中国在国际低频射电天文研究中的领先地位。
FAST工程二期的总体建设目标是到2030年,在FAST周边30 km范围内建成由64台40 m口径天线组成的大型干涉阵列,从而大幅提升FAST的综合性能,超越国际SKA项目和美国ngVLA项目的观测能力,确保中国在低频(厘米波段)射电领域的国际领先地位。项目建设分为3个阶段。
第1阶段(至2027年):在FAST周边5 km内建成24台40 m口径天线,形成FAST核心阵“1+24”先导阵列。“1+24”阵列建成后将针对特定科学目标开展先导观测。
第2阶段(2027—2030年):在FAST周边30 km内再建设40台40 m口径天线,与第一阶段的先导阵列共同组成完备的FAST二期阵列(FAST核心阵“1+64”)。此阵列将与国内的CVN网络联合运行,观测灵敏度可达到6400 m2/K,角分辨率可达到15 mas,实现对SKA和ngVLA的超越,并启动对FAST核心阵关键科学目标的常规观测。
第3阶段(2030年及以后):随着望远镜数量和分布范围的进一步增加,将继续扩展FAST二期工程的观测能力,并探索国际合作,进一步巩固中国在低频射电天文学领域的全球领导地位。
FAST工程二期项目将采用40 m口径望远镜组阵,主要基于2个关键因素。首先,40 m口径望远镜与FAST的19波束馈源具有理想的视场匹配,适合组阵配置。为维持FAST的灵敏度水平(2600 m2/K),计算结果显示,不同口径望远镜与FAST组阵所需的天线数量各不相同。如图 2所示,灵敏度曲线显示,为保持FAST的超高灵敏度优势,100 m口径望远镜需要4台,60 m口径需要15台,40 m口径需要至少24台,30 m口径则需至少42台。这意味着该综合阵列将拥有与FAST相当的探测致密射电源的能力,能够进行精确定位,确保不会错失重要的科学发现。
其次,成本效益是另一个主要考虑因素。30 m和40 m口径望远镜的建造成本分别约为500万元和1200万元,而当口径超过40 m时,单位面积成本呈显著增长,例如50 m口径望远镜的制造成本接近4000万元。因此,30 m或40 m望远镜是与FAST组阵的最经济选择,其中40 m口径望远镜的单位面积成本相对较低(图 3)。
项目计划于2027年前完成24台40 m口径望远镜的建设,并将率先实现与FAST组阵观测。这些望远镜将分布在5 km半径范围内,最大基线长度为10 km。在1.4 GHz频率下,该阵列可实现约5 as的成像分辨率,提升FAST当前分辨率33倍。5 as的分辨率已接近或达到主流光学、紫外和红外巡天项目的水平(如斯隆数字化巡天(SDSS)、星系演化探测器(GALEX)、广域红外巡天探测器(WISE)、2微米全天巡天(2MASS)等),这对射电星系的识别和多波段研究有重大科学意义。此外,该阵列长基线观测能力将用于致密射电源的研究,例如AGN、FRB的高精度定位,甚至高红移HI星系的观测,这些科学研究将以较低的成本实现。
UV覆盖由阵列天线分布决定,是阵列成像质量和观测效率的关键因素。然而,与平原地区不同,阵列的布局必须适应山区地形。前期研究在FAST台址5 km范围内选定的24个候选台址,进行了UV分布仿真模拟验证[11]。结果显示,对应的UV覆盖及综合波束形状表明,2 h的观测可将波束旁瓣抑制在4% 以下,而4 h的观测可将旁瓣抑制到2% 以下,基本满足大多数科学目标的成图需求。
到2030年,项目计划再完成40台40 m口径望远镜的建设,扩展至FAST周边30 km半径。随着天线数量的增加,阵列的UV覆盖和灵敏度将进一步提升,灵敏度将达到6000 m²/K。届时,将完成FAST二期阵列的升级,并与国内其他大口径射电望远镜进一步融合,形成全国中低频甚长基线干涉测量网(Verylong-baseline interferometry,VLBI网)。该网络的角分辨率将达到15 mas,成为全球领先的中低频射电观测网络。FAST核心阵各建设阶段时间节点、性能与国际前沿干涉阵列对比见表 2
贵州省黔南州FAST周边30 km范围内,即FAST电磁波环境保护区。FAST周边30 km在贵州省已经实现立法保护,可以保证在今后相当长的一段时期的电磁环境质量,覆盖该区域的航线已经在多方的努力下进行调整,这对于其他地区是几乎不可能实现的;此外,在5~30 km组阵,可以实现60 km级的基线,组阵后的分辨率有望达到亚角秒级;从投资的角度讲,地方政府为了保护FAST周边的电磁环境付出巨大代价,天文领域也应该尽可能将地方投入效益最大化利用。在此区域建设阵列望远镜既不影响地方经济发展,又能充分利用优良的台址环境,还能发挥FAST的灵敏度优势,可谓一举三得。
望远镜选址需在目标区域内通过地形测绘和地质要素考察及勘测等开展地学综合分析,筛选出具备建设、施工条件的备选点位。在此基础上,进行电磁环境监测,确定符合射电观测条件的优选台址。由于FAST周边5 km范围内的区域已被立法保护免受电磁干扰,因此电磁环境并非阵列选址的首要考虑因素。然而,山区环境带来了确保望远镜具有低视野的挑战,这对于最大化天空覆盖范围至关重要。该项目的目标是实现不低于70°的通视角度,同时选址工作还必须关注施工条件的便利性,如水、电、道路等三通保障。经过多次现场考察和讨论,前期选址工作已取得显著进展。目前FAST台址5 km范围内的备选台址的点位分布和地理信息见图 4图 5~图 8分别给出其中白龙台址和白马台址的电磁环境测试及结果。可见,在FAST电磁环境保护区内中低频射电观测条件优质,符合预期。
40 m天线主要由天馈分系统、结构分系统、伺服分系统3部分组成(图 9)。天馈分系统由天线反射面和馈源组成;结构分系统由天线反射器、天线座架和塔基等部分组成;伺服分系统由天线控制单元(antennacontrol unit,ACU)、驱动控制单元(drive control unit,DCU)、驱动电机、轴角编码单元和安全保护单元组成。天线工作时,射电信号由主反射面反射后汇集到焦点,能量经位于焦点的馈源进入低噪声放大器(lownoise amplifier,LNA)并放大送至后端设备。天线运动性能指标见表 3
40 m望远镜全口径工作频率不低于5 GHz,反射面中心区域22 m为实心面板,这部分工作频率不低于20 GHz(图 9),实现一些高频谱线观测的科学需求[11]。工作频段设计包括0.2~1 GHz、1~2.4 GHz、2.4~10 GHz。
FAST核心阵是一个由口径巨大的FAST天线和一批口径较小天线组成的混合阵列。混合阵列的优势:一方面是使用FAST的大口径反射面可以显著提高接收面积和灵敏度;另一方面采用多个中小型天线与之组阵,可以在维持较低成本情况下提高角分辨率,实现更好的UV采样,降低合成波束旁瓣,改善成图质量。
天线口径越大波束越窄,因此大小天线的主波束宽度不同,共同连网干涉时,只有共同覆盖部分的天空信号具有相干性。如果直接应用普通的均匀口径阵列算法,成像会引入额外天空背景噪声或导致一定偏差,例如射电源流量不准确、成像存在扭曲等。因此在对混合阵列数据进行处理时,需对传统均匀口径干涉阵列成像算法进行修正。
针对不同科学目标的实际需求,基于混合阵的干涉成图处理算法将是FAST二期工程的必要关键技术之一。包括对射电连续谱、HI、复合线等具有延展辐射结构的暗弱信号进行高分辨率成像,需结合FAST对观测目标进行有效的较长时间跟踪观测,以获得较好的UV覆盖,进而改善成图质量。数据处理涉及混合波束成像的CLEAN算法优化、卷积神经网络等高质量成像算法相关研究。与HI成图观测问题不同,时域天文领域的射电瞬变源研究对点源的精确定位和流量测量精度有较高需求。其数据处理挑战在于其持续时间较短,特别是脉冲星和FRB,其信号持续时间仅为毫秒级。因此,需要进行极高时间分辨率的数字多波束合成算法开发。
此外,FAST核心阵早期将使用FAST 19波束接收机加入干涉组网,未来相位阵馈源(phased arrayfeed,PAF)接收机研制完成后,将替代多波束加入干涉阵列。尽管FAST单个波束宽度小于其他阵列单元,但其多波束或PAF的综合视场却与阵列的40 m天线主波束视场匹配。为此,基于FAST多波束的混合阵列数据相关处理、波束合成及成像算法也是FAST二期的重要建设任务之一。
综上所述,通过对混合阵列相关问题的研究,包括理论分析、仿真模拟,以及使用实测数据进行检验,实现FAST二期的关键技术突破,可大大增加未来射电阵列的设计选择,根据科学需求、天线结构、电子设备、站址和辅助设施的不同成本和要求,进行更灵活的设置,使中国在中低频射电天文学方面保持国际领先地位。
综合孔径阵列与单体大口径望远镜相比存在几个显著区别:望远镜口径小、天线数量多、分布范围大。虽然综合孔径阵列的单体天线体量小,但接收机系统的要求与大口径单天线基本一致。这意味着综合孔径阵列中接收机系统的成本占比远大于FAST这类单体大口径望远镜。所以出于成本的考量,在综合孔径阵列中不宜像单体大口径望远镜一样不惜成本提升接收机性能。另外,阵列望远镜分布有一定的距离,维护工作难度同样显著增加,故提高接收机系统的可靠性对阵列望远镜后期维护成本有非常重要的现实意义。
基于上述需求的考虑,近些年来一种基于磷化铟等新兴基底材料的常温放大器及接收机技术已经成为国际上新的研究热点。相比于传统的制冷接收机技术,常温接收机系统因不需要制冷措施,系统的复杂程度得到大幅降低,故在成本及可靠性方面有绝对的优势。然而,高性能的常温放大器想要在国内射电天文领域做到规模性应用,还存在以下几个问题需要解决:(1)目前高性能低噪声放大器晶体管主要依赖进口,不排除未来完全禁运的可能;(2)目前国际上先进的常温低噪声放大器在噪声方面已经接近传统制冷低噪声放大器的水平,但在工作带宽上还存在较明显差距。
基于FAST二期的需求针对上述问题开展高性能常温接收机系统的研究,改变中国在中低频射电天文领域在探测器方面长期受制于人的局面。具体工作包括:(1)利用新兴的磷化铟基底材料研制国产化晶体管及低噪声放大器,其中放大器噪声温度须低至7 K左右,工作带宽须达到3倍带宽,解决关键器件依赖进口的问题;(2)创新性地采用馈源和放大器一体化设计进一步减少插入损耗,保证接收机的系统温度可以控制在25 K左右,最终研制完成具有国际领先性能的常温低噪声接收机及配套技术。
将在望远镜阵列各站建设配套屏蔽机房,机房内安装望远镜本地控制单元、时频单元、接收机数字终端等。阵列单元安装工作频率、噪声温度等性能完全一致的接收机,各站接收机观测信号通过光纤首先进入本地数字后端,在本地完成数字化,数字信号由光缆传输到望远镜阵列相关中心。数字信号相比模拟信号,在传输过程中具有更强的抗干扰能力,并且数字信号将在天线本地标记时间戳后再传输,避免长距离光纤传输带来的相位误差,各站观测数据在相关处理中心完成相关处理后进行存储,如图 10[11]所示。
FAST核心阵的数据中心设置有:望远镜阵列总体监测及控制系统、时频服务系统、数据相关中心及数据存储中心等。在数据中心与各站之间铺设互联光缆,望远镜阵列的观测数据、测控数据、时频标准信号等通过光纤进行传输,其中时频标准信号通过高精度稳相光纤技术进行传输,保证相关中心,以及望远镜各站之间时频信号精准同步且无频偏。望远镜阵列各站总体控制、接收机及数字后端状态、时频系统工作状态可由位于望远镜阵列相关中心的总控系统进行远程监测和控制。
相关处理服务器是望远镜阵列的核心数据处理设备,阵列中的每台天线都会产生基带数据流,为了实时处理这些高速数据流,需要搭建专用的硬件相关处理机。由于阵列中天线数目较大(25台),为了减少运算和降低旁瓣,相关处理机将采用FX(先通道化后相关处理)模式,对基带数据流进行实时相关处理。基带数据流首先进入F(通道化)模块,经过延迟补偿、傅里叶变换、量化等,得到通道化的数据流。通过高速交换机,数据流再进入X(相关处理)模块。在各个通道上,对每对天线的数据进行乘积和时间平均,得到每条基线在各个通道上的可视度函数,最后传输到数据存储服务器中。相关处理机的规模将会随着阵列的建设情况进行扩充。其中,F模块的规模由天线数决定,将采用现场可编程门阵列(fieldprogrammable gate array,FPGA)对基带数据流进行通道化。而X模块的规模,除了天线数,也跟带宽和通道数相关,将采用FPGA或者GPU对通道化的数据流进行乘积和相加的运算。
FAST工程二期升级,将使中国在射电天文学领域迈入一个新的发展阶段。通过建设以40 m口径望远镜为单元的高灵敏度、大规模干涉阵列,它不仅可以保持FAST现有的高灵敏度水平,还能够极大提升其空间分辨率和观测能力,形成一个具备国际竞争力的中低频射电观测平台。本项目的成功实施预期带来以下几方面的产出与影响。
首先,FAST核心阵第一阶段的建成将显著提升中国在射电天文领域的科学发现潜力。“1+24”先导阵列具有匹配FAST的灵敏度和5角秒级的成像分辨率,预计将在脉冲星搜索与研究、HI观测、AGN研究、引力波电磁对应体探测、FRB高精度定位以及系外行星的射电信号探测等方面取得突破性进展。这些重要科学目标的实现,将显著提高中国在国际射电天文研究中的话语权和影响力。
其次,FAST二期工程不仅将满足当前科学研究的需求,还为未来的低频射电天文学研究奠定了坚实基础。项目的第二阶段将进一步扩展阵列的天线数量和覆盖范围,提升阵列的UV覆盖和灵敏度,最终形成一个具备亚角秒分辨率和高探测精度的射电观测网络。这不仅有助于推进中国对宇宙中致密天体、黑洞、恒星形成区等深空天体的探测,还将推动FRB的定位精度至国际领先水平,并对早期宇宙中的高红移星系开展深入观测研究。
FAST核心阵的建设还将为中国在射电天文设备研发、技术创新及国际合作中带来深远影响。通过与国内其他射电望远镜及国际天文台的合作,中国有望构建一个涵盖广域的射电甚长基线干涉网络,在中低频波段上形成具有全球竞争力的观测平台。此外,FAST二期项目的技术积累和科研成果,也将为后续更大规模、更高频段的射电天文项目(如FASTA)提供技术支持和科学储备,进一步提升中国在射电天文领域的国际领先地位。
总之,FAST二期项目的建设与发展,将不仅满足中国在射电天文领域的前沿科学需求,还将在全球射电天文学的技术与研究领域中占据重要地位。未来,项目将为推动中国从“天文大国”向“天文强国”的转变做出积极贡献,并引领国际低频深度射电天文研究的前沿方向。
