Soil health refers to the ability of soil to sustainably support plant productivity, maintain environmental quality, and promote the health of animals, plants and humans. Soil health is directly related to the sustainable use of soil resources and the sustainable development of social economy. Based on the introduction of the concept and connotation of soil health and the current research status, this paper discusses the principles and technical systems of ecological regulation for soil health, proposes to manage soil health from two aspects: improving the soil environment and regulating the soil biological system, and especially emphasizes the important role of rhizosphere microbiome in soil health management; taking conservative agriculture as an example, we introduce the basic principles and practices of maintaining soil health through ecological engineering measures. Finally, we look forward to the future research directions of soil health and proposes management suggestions such as building a Chinese soil health control system. The paper aims to update the public's understanding of soil health, promote soil health research, and provide scientific and technological support for the sustainable use of soil resources in China.

土壤健康是指土壤可持续支持植物生产力、保持环境质量、促进动植物和人类健康的能力。土壤健康直接关系到土壤资源可持续利用和社会经济可持续发展。在论述土壤健康概念内涵及研究现状的基础上,探讨了面向土壤健康的土壤生态调控原理与技术体系,提出从改善土壤环境和调控土壤生物系统2方面管理土壤健康,并特别强调了根际微生物组在土壤健康管理中的重要作用;以保护性农业为例,介绍了通过生态工程措施维持农田土壤健康的基本原则和具体实践。最后,展望了土壤健康研究的未来方向,提出构建中国土壤健康管控系统等建议,旨在提升公众对土壤健康的认知,推进土壤健康研究,为中国土壤资源永续利用提供科技支撑。

土壤健康是指土壤可持续支持植物生产力、保持环境质量、促进动植物和人类健康的能力。土壤健康直接关系到土壤资源可持续利用和社会经济可持续发展。在论述土壤健康概念内涵及研究现状的基础上,探讨了面向土壤健康的土壤生态调控原理与技术体系,提出从改善土壤环境和调控土壤生物系统2方面管理土壤健康,并特别强调了根际微生物组在土壤健康管理中的重要作用;以保护性农业为例,介绍了通过生态工程措施维持农田土壤健康的基本原则和具体实践。最后,展望了土壤健康研究的未来方向,提出构建中国土壤健康管控系统等建议,旨在提升公众对土壤健康的认知,推进土壤健康研究,为中国土壤资源永续利用提供科技支撑。

Soil health refers to the ability of soil to sustainably support plant productivity, maintain environmental quality, and promote the health of animals, plants and humans. Soil health is directly related to the sustainable use of soil resources and the sustainable development of social economy. Based on the introduction of the concept and connotation of soil health and the current research status, this paper discusses the principles and technical systems of ecological regulation for soil health, proposes to manage soil health from two aspects: improving the soil environment and regulating the soil biological system, and especially emphasizes the important role of rhizosphere microbiome in soil health management; taking conservative agriculture as an example, we introduce the basic principles and practices of maintaining soil health through ecological engineering measures. Finally, we look forward to the future research directions of soil health and proposes management suggestions such as building a Chinese soil health control system. The paper aims to update the public's understanding of soil health, promote soil health research, and provide scientific and technological support for the sustainable use of soil resources in China.

土壤不仅是一个复杂动态的生命系统,具备粮食生产功能,还承担着水源涵养、水质和污染物净化、生物多样性维持,以及调节和应对全球变化等多重生态和环境功能[1]。土壤健康是指土壤作为一个生态系统,持续发挥其功能,以维持植物生产力、保持环境质量、促进动植物和人类健康的能力[2]。康奈尔土壤健康评价体系将土壤健康定义为:土壤作为一个动态、复杂且有生命的系统,在特定的土地利用和管理目标下,基于其内在属性和环境条件发挥功能,持续提供生态系统服务的能力[3]。中国耕地质量等级评价标准将土壤健康定义为:土壤作为一个动态生命系统,维持其功能的持续能力,可通过土壤清洁程度和土壤生物多样性来表征[4]。其中,清洁程度反映了土壤受重金属、农药和农膜残留等有毒有害物质影响的程度;生物多样性则反映了土壤生命体丰富程度。吴克宁等[5]认为土壤健康状况可概括为土壤发挥功能和提供生态系统服务的能力。土壤功能是一系列支撑生态系统服务的土壤过程,而环境胁迫则是影响这些过程的重要因素。
体现土壤在社会、生态系统或农业中的作用或功能的概念还有土壤肥力、土壤质量和土壤安全等[6]。土壤健康与这些概念并存,但在研究尺度和目标上有所区别(图 1)。土壤肥力是指土壤在作物生产中的作用,由农户在田块尺度进行管理,以获得有收益的、可供人类使用的粮食和纤维为目标。土壤质量是指土壤发挥其农业及相关环境服务功能的能力。土壤健康与土壤质量的区别在于:土壤质量通常侧重于与人类有关的生态系统服务,而土壤健康则超越了人类利益,延伸到包括星球健康在内的更广泛的可持续发展目标。土壤安全的研究尺度最广,包含了土壤健康,将土壤视作公共资源(如水和大气),将土壤生态系统服务与其他人权同等重视,因此通常用于包含人类文化、资本和法律的土壤管理政策中。土壤健康不仅包含了土壤肥力和土壤质量涉及的尺度、利益相关方、功能和评价工具,还具有一些与土壤安全相同的政策层面的意义,而不仅是关注作物生产或其他明确的人类利益。土壤健康概念的多维性使土壤管理目标与可持续性目标保持一致,并为兼顾多重利益相关者、土壤功能和时空尺度奠定了基础。土壤健康框架最重要的成果之一是在土壤管理中增加了生物学视角,以便解决作物生产面临的长期可持续性挑战,并将土壤评估和管理扩展到解决人类自身以外的对生物多样性、水质、气候和星球健康的关切。
土壤健康研究对国家层面土壤资源可持续管理与利用具有重要意义。首先,土壤健康对确保粮食安全至关重要,而粮食安全是国家战略的关键组成部分。土壤健康评估为可持续土壤管理提供了科学依据。通过开展土壤健康状况评估并建立预警体系,能更准确地了解国家土壤资源状况,进而提升土壤健康和生态功能,确保粮食安全。其次,土壤健康研究有助于提高土壤质量和肥力,这对于中国这样一个人口众多、耕地资源有限的国家而言尤为重要。此外,土壤健康研究还聚焦于土壤环境污染问题,包括揭示污染物在土壤和作物中的迁移转化过程及机制,以及开发高效的污染修复技术,以应对工业化进程给土壤环境质量带来的挑战。土壤健康概念的另一大益处在于提升公众对土壤资源重要性的认知,并促进利益相关者之间的沟通[7]。总之,土壤健康研究不仅对于提高耕地质量、保障粮食安全至关重要,还涉及食品安全、人类健康以及生态系统的稳定性和韧性,是实现国家土壤资源管理战略和可持续利用的重要支撑。
健康土壤的特征可归结为物理、化学、生物和可持续性4个方面[8]。物理特征包括较好的可耕种性(如结构疏松、土层厚度足以支撑植物生长)和良好的持水和排水性能。化学特征包括:丰富的有机质、适量的养分供应,且无有毒有害物质。生物特征包括数量多、种类丰富的有益土壤生物(如参与养分循环、有机质分解的有益微生物),较少的病原菌和害虫,植物根系、土壤及微生物形成的根际微生态维持动态平衡。可持续性特征包括对环境恶化和胁迫具有一定的抵抗力和恢复力。
目前,国内外对土壤健康的研究在不断系统深入,其核心目标是促进土壤生态系统的多功能协同作用,实现土壤资源可持续利用。研究人员构建了土壤健康研究的基本框架,涵盖建立土壤健康指标及评价体系、深入分析土壤健康演变规律与驱动机制,以及研发健康土壤培育技术等方面。
土壤健康评价方法的发展历程大致可分为3个阶段[9]。第一阶段起始于20世纪70年代,主要依靠描述性指标(如土壤颜色、含水量、蚯蚓的有无等),对土壤的健康状况进行直观评估。第二阶段,随着土壤分析测试方法不断发展,促使学者们开发出更多量化指标来评价土壤健康,从而更准确地表征土壤健康状况。第三阶段,生物技术的蓬勃发展使得土壤生物多样性成为评价土壤健康状况的关键指标。同时,国际上建立了多种土壤质量/健康评价方法体系,主要基于土壤健康特征指标或土壤功能指标进行评价[10]图 2)。
在基于土壤健康特征指标的评价体系中,康奈尔土壤健康评价体系发展的较为完善。该体系从土壤物理、化学和生物学指标中筛选出最小数据集,作为量化指标来描述土壤健康特征。通过指标评分函数将测量值转换为分值,进而计算出土壤健康指数,用于定量评估农田土壤的综合健康状况。这种方法适用于从土壤生产潜力和环境管理的角度,对土壤健康的性状、功能进行监测和评价[7]。基于土壤功能的土壤健康评价方法通过构建土壤属性指标和土壤功能之间的层级关系或模型,对土壤的单项功能和多重功能进行系统评估。这种方法适用于以土壤功能为评价单元的土壤健康评价,每项土壤功能均由多个物理、化学和生物学指标共同决定,这与单独评估各项指标的方法明显不同。欧盟LANDMARK项目开发的“soil navigator”农田管理决策系统,是目前国际上主流的土壤功能评价体系之一。其他评价体系还包括土壤管理评估框架(soil management assessment framework,SMAF)和新西兰在线土壤指标评价工具“SINDI”(soil quality INDIcators)等[11]。各种土壤健康评价体系在数据集来源、指标筛选、权重确定、赋分函数、综合得分计算和验证方法上存在差异,但其共同目标是通过掌握不同区域的土壤健康状况,实现土壤资源的可持续管理。中国也制定了耕地质量的评价标准和规范,建立了耕地质量评价方法,初步构建了土壤健康评价的基础理论框架。总的来说,土壤健康评价方法正朝着多目标、多指标和标准化的方向不断发展。当前在土壤健康研究领域,碳汇相关[12]和生物相关[13]指标的效力评估、核心指标的简化以及生物指示物的筛选[14]正受到越来越多的关注。
目前围绕土壤健康演变规律与驱动机制已开展了不少研究工作,显示土地开垦、施肥管理和土地利用方式与土壤生产力及多功能性密切相关,也会对土壤健康产生显著影响。对中国华北地区长期集约化农田与撂荒44年的田块进行对比研究,发现农业集约化开垦导致土壤细菌和真菌网络稳定性降低,进而使土壤健康指数下降[15]。在对华北平原不同施肥管理田块的研究中,涉及97个化肥处理,44个有机肥处理和34个有机、无机结合处理田块,结果显示有机肥处理和有机无机结合处理的土壤健康指数显著高于化肥处理,并且与玉米产量正相关[16]。一项涵盖华北不同有机肥施用量的55个田块实验发现,高有机肥施用量相较于不施用或低施用量,能显著提升土壤健康指数和作物产量[17]。在亚热带地区一项关于不同施肥管理的长期定位试验中,发现有机肥处理相较于不施肥和施化肥处理,能够同时提高土壤健康指数和多功能性(养分循环、土壤生物多样性维持、缓冲和过滤、生产力等),而自然植被恢复处理的土壤健康指数和多功能性虽高于不施肥和化肥处理,但不及有机肥处理[18]。一项针对全球旱地土壤修复效果的meta分析显示,土壤修复措施总体上对土壤健康相关指标具有促进作用,但容重提升幅度最小,基础呼吸提升幅度最大,土壤有机碳和总氮的提升程度则受干旱程度和土壤质地影响,这表明土壤健康的提升受环境条件制约[19]。在美国和欧洲开展的区域至国家尺度的研究发现,种植覆盖作物可以有效提升土壤健康指标[20]、土壤多功能性和作物产量[21]
目前中国乃至全球面临着严重的土壤退化问题,如何通过土壤生态调控恢复和维持土壤健康对于国家粮食安全和可持续发展至关重要。以土壤健康为目标的土壤生态调控主要采用物理、化学或生物学技术措施对土壤生态系统进行综合管理,尽量减少土壤侵蚀、提高土壤有机质含量、促进土壤养分均衡和循环、防止和减缓土壤盐碱化、土壤污染及酸化、保持和增加土壤生物多样性、减少土地封盖、防止和减缓土壤板结,最终达到维持和保障土壤健康的目的(图 3[2223]
常见的物理措施包括改善土壤结构和团聚性,增强土壤透气性和保水性等。例如,采用板犁和弹齿中耕机替代免耕可大幅增加半干旱地区土壤的渗水能力和导水率,改善土壤水分状况[24]。小麦与大豆的轮作体系通过引入具有不同根系结构和生长特征的作物达到了有效降低土壤紧实度、改善土壤结构的效果[25]。化学调控措施主要有调节土壤pH值和养分含量,降低土壤盐碱度和重金属、农药等有害物质含量等。例如,采用共沉淀法制备的磁性海泡石可吸附去除土壤中的铅,最高回收率可达85%[26]。生物调控包括增加有益微生物多样性,减少病原微生物以及防止生物入侵等。对豌豆接种枯草芽孢杆菌和铜绿假单胞菌后,植株水杨酸(植物病原菌防御反应重要标志物)含量比对照升高1.45倍,植株抗病能力显著增强[27]。与高达80% 的植物形成共生关系的丛枝菌根真菌(arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi,AMF)不仅在促进养分吸收、辅助植物抗逆、调节种间关系和增强群体免疫中发挥重要作用,还有助于稳定生态系统结构和功能,促进生态恢复[28]。土壤微生物作为土壤生物系统的重要组成部分,可通过自身代谢参与元素循环和污染物降解等过程,在增强根际免疫、提高土壤肥力和作物产量等方面扮演着关键角色,也成为土壤生态调控的关键对象[23]
土壤健康状况对于维护国家粮食安全、保障人类健康和可持续发展至关重要。农田土壤承载着人类社会日益增长的粮食需求,同时也严重受到人类活动的干扰,农田土壤健康状况面临严峻挑战。随着全球人口和粮食生产需求的不断增长,对农田土壤健康和生产力的维护受到政府层面的高度重视。总体上,农田土壤健康管理和调控可参考美国农业部(United States Department of Agriculture,USDA)建议的4大原则[29]:(1)最大限度地增加土壤中的根系量(maxi-mize living roots);(2)尽量减少土壤干扰(minimize disturbance);(3)最大限度增加地上植被覆盖度(maximize soil cover);(4)最大限度地增加土壤生物多样性(maximize biodiversity)。依据这些原则,实施免耕、覆盖种植和轮作等保护性耕作措施,能显著增加土壤有机质含量、加速物质循环速率、提升土壤渗透性,以及改善土壤微生物活性,进而提高作物产量。
健康状况不佳或退化的土壤往往存在诸多物理、化学或生物障碍因子,如土壤板结、酸化、重金属污染、有机物污染、盐碱化、土壤贫瘠、生物污染或有益微生物缺失等。针对不同情形的土壤健康问题有不同的生态调控策略,但大体可分为土壤环境调控、土壤生物系统调控和生态工程措施3大类。
土壤环境调控分为自然调控和人为调控。前者是指在自然因素作用下,土壤通过自净作用(如吸附、分解、迁移和转化等)使土壤物理化学障碍因子减轻的过程;后者可通过:(1)物理手段(如热处理或向土壤中加入用于改善土壤物理、化学性质或生物活性的土壤改良剂等)降低或消除土壤物理、化学和生物障碍因子;(2)氧化还原、光催化降解等化学方法消减土壤障碍;(3)借助生物生长和代谢活动进行土壤环境调控[30]。例如,以往应对盐渍化土壤环境的调控措施主要为灌排措施,即依据“盐随水来,盐随水去”原理进行脱盐排盐,每亩耗水达到2000 m3。通过种植和综合利用盐生植物,亩产1.58 t生物量即可带走约400 kg的盐分,土壤盐分含量在种植第1年就降低了40%,第2年降低超过60%,第3年降低了85%。最终,土壤环境得到全面改善,从寸草不生改善到可以正常种植棉花[3132]
土壤健康是土壤环境与土壤生物系统联系在一起的同一健康[33],而土壤生物系统是维持和调控土壤健康的关键,在退化土壤生态修复中发挥着重要作用[23]。从土壤生态系统微观层面出发,通过添加微生物菌剂等技术措施可以直接调节土壤微生物群落结构,从而改善土壤养分供应状况和植物健康;或者采用抑制有害微生物生长的方式,如高温焖棚、土壤熏蒸、杀菌剂喷灌、种子包衣、生防菌等方法进行调控。涵盖细菌、真菌和病毒等成员的根际微生物组在减轻土壤污染、促进养分循环、调节植物生长发育和养分吸收以及病害防控等方面发挥着重要作用[34]。根际微生物组不仅可以帮助植物吸收养分和水分,还可以通过参与植物生长调节和缓解逆境胁迫等方式促进植物生长,以及作为生防因子帮助植物抗病[35]。改善土壤环境,营造良好生境,是调控根际微生物群落的根本措施。相比于施用大量磷肥,为处于磷养分贫瘠土壤环境的番茄接种具有活化土壤养分、促进植物生长的微生物菌群后,番茄对磷养分的吸收能力显著增强,生长更加旺盛[36]。同时,微生物菌剂代替化肥可减少化肥对土壤造成的污染,进而降低其对土壤健康带来的负面影响。向丹参施用含微藻和富含解淀粉芽孢杆菌、枯草芽孢杆菌等微生物的生物肥料后,其根系生物量增加了29.31%~60.39%,根系铅含量降低了37.58%~46.03%[37],表明有益微生物可以通过调控土壤−植物系统中有毒有害物质的迁移转化,对植物起到保护和促生作用。此外,一些土壤微生物具备降解磺胺磷和马拉硫磷等有机磷农药,以及多环芳烃(polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon,PAH)、芘(pyrene,Pyr)、苯并芘(benzo[a]pyrene,BaP)等高分子化合物的能力。例如革兰氏阳性菌Microbacterium esteraromaticum MM1对初始质量浓度为100 mg/L的芘的降解率高达98.7%,并将其作为碳源提供给植物利用,减轻了芘对土壤健康造成的危害[38]。芽孢杆菌属功能菌在植物病害的生物防治中应用广泛,不仅可以通过释放拮抗性代谢产物(如抗菌肽等细菌素)和分泌特定的化合物或酶干扰病原体群体感应信号从而影响其聚集和致病性,还可通过富集特定土著土壤微生物等方式达到防控植物病害的作用[39]。此外,新兴的添加“益生元”等方法亦可帮助调控土壤生物系统。所谓“益生元”,是指添加至土壤中有助于提高有益微生物的丰度或活性从而给宿主带来益处的物质。将正常番茄显著高于患病番茄的代谢产物(如核糖、乳酸、木糖、甘露糖、麦芽糖、葡萄糖内酯和利比醇等)作为益生元可促进有益微生物的生长,有效抑制了土壤环境中一些致病菌的生存,减少有害微生物对土壤健康造成的破坏,进而保护番茄和其他茄科作物(如辣椒、茄子等)免受病原菌侵袭[40]。与此同时,添加益生元也促进了根际土壤微生物组的碳代谢和自我毒素降解。
生态工程是指应用生态系统中物种共生与物质循环再生原理,结构与功能协调原则,结合系统分析的最优化方法,设计的促进分层多级利用的生产工艺系统[41]。以农田生态系统为例,提高土壤健康的生态工程措施需要从作物管理和土壤管理两方面入手,其最终目的是保持生态系统的稳定与多功能性,从而保持土壤健康(图 4)。具体而言,遵循基于适应当地条件和需求的3个相互关联的原则实施保护性农业,包括最低程度的土壤机械扰动(免耕)、永久性土壤有机物覆盖(不低于30%)和物种多样化(不同作物轮作或间作),即可达到维持或者提升土壤健康的目的。保护性农业是一种可以防止耕地流失并恢复退化土壤的农业生产体系,具备可持续性、保护生物多样性、增加碳汇、节省劳动力、增加产量和降低成本等优势。例如,通过种植覆盖作物(主要经济作物外的非经济作物)的方式,即可有效增加土壤有机质和提升肥力、减少侵蚀、改善土壤结构、促进水分渗透和抑制病虫害暴发的潜力。通过全球尺度的meta分析发现,采用覆盖作物的方式使土壤碳储量整体增加了12%[42]
中国科学院东北地理与农业生态研究所提出的针对黑龙江省黑土保护与利用的“龙江模式”采用的就是保护性农业耕作理论与技术[43]。例如,通过对退化的黑土进行秸秆深埋还田,构建了肥沃的耕层;应用秸秆还田、作物混作等技术大幅度提高了土壤有机质含量。内蒙古乌兰察布商都县屯垦队镇也曾通过免耕播种的保护性耕作模式种植春小麦,尽可能地减少了作物种植对土地的扰动[44]。类似地,干旱少雨的新疆塔城地区额敏县上户镇的田间对比试验证明,在少浇2~3次水的情况下,采用秸秆覆盖、免耕播种的保护性农业措施的试验田玉米比采用常规模式种植的玉米亩产增加了26 kg[44]
除了发展土壤健康管理技术体系,国家和地方政府制定、完善和实施相关政策或管理规定也是守护土壤健康的重要保障。例如,化肥和农药施用过多会导致土壤酸化及重金属等有害物质的积累,危害植物和土壤生物,进而破坏土壤生态系统的平衡与稳定,对土壤健康造成巨大威胁。2022年农业农村部出台的《到2025年化肥减量化行动方案》和《到2025年化学农药减量化行动方案》政策有效遏制了中国土壤污染的持续恶化,保障了土壤生物的生存环境及粮食生产安全[45]。近年来,人类活动的加剧使全球土壤侵蚀率提高了10~40倍[46]。土壤侵蚀会导致土壤水分、养分的流失和土壤沙化,降低土壤质量,使动植物及微生物的生存环境恶化,危害土壤健康。内蒙古自治区林业和草原局通过出台《内蒙古:三大措施推进草原生态保护》,划定禁牧和草畜平衡区,严格落实草畜平衡和禁牧休牧制度,以有效解决草原过牧导致的草原退化问题,对于维护区域生态平衡和土壤健康起到重要作用。此外,生态环境部也发布了《中国生物多样性保护战略与行动计划(2023—2030年)》来维持和保护生物多样性[47]。生物多样性越丰富,生态系统越稳定,生态功能和服务才能得到保障。这些国家政策的制定和落实对于从整体上保护中国生态环境和维持土壤健康具有重要积极意义。
土壤是一张覆盖在地球表面的有生命的毯子。将土壤看作生命系统,生命系统是有复杂调节机制的内稳态结构集合,因此土壤健康不能单纯地用功能判定,需要用内稳态来界定。目前,科研人员正在努力明确土壤健康的内涵,并量化土壤健康评价的指标体系和评价方法,但是当前的方法仅仅将土壤健康作为一种属性,主要集中于其生产力功能,并未从土壤作为一个复杂生命系统出发,探索土壤组织内部的“稳态”,关于维系土壤健康的内稳态机制仍缺乏研究,需要探明哪些维系土壤稳态的条件一旦偏离,系统可通过自耦合调节系统进行恢复,或必须进行人为干预以助其恢复健康状态。
长期以来土壤被视为“黑箱”和大自然赋予的免费资本。近年来随着人们对土壤生物多样性及结构稳定性的认识不断积累,逐渐认识到土壤微生物群落的装配影响土壤生态系统的稳定及土壤健康状态。当前土壤微生物的研究逐渐成为热点,强化地上和地下生物互作,实现土壤结构和功能的耦合是健康土壤培育的核心问题。土壤学家应积极推动土壤微生物的研究,充分发挥有益微生物的作用,增强土壤对扰动的抵抗力,土壤的自我调节能力和快速恢复能力,提高土壤在气候变化等不确定因素影响下快速恢复健康的能力。
为了实现有效的土壤健康管理,需建立相对完善的土壤健康管控系统,构建土壤大数据管理平台,利用大数据技术建立全面的土壤检测网络,实现全链条智慧检测。掌握土壤健康指标的时空变化特征、气候变化及人为活动对土壤健康的扰动、土壤自身反馈及自我调节机制,实现中国土壤健康的智能化、精准化、高效化。未来需坚持推动农业绿色发展理念,形成实时反馈的、全面的土壤健康系统评价体系,推动土壤资源永续利用。
2024年世界环境日主题是“守护健康土壤,共筑美好家园”。目前,各国政府都在积极推动可持续土壤管理行动。中国也需要从国家层面广泛传播土壤健康的知识,加强土壤健康教育和公众参与,通过各种渠道和方式,普及土壤健康理念,培育企业、种植户和农民保护土壤的公众意识。提高对土壤健康重要性的认识和重视程度,鼓励公众共同关心、支持和参与土壤健康管理,使全社会大众成为土壤健康的践行者和推动者。
