Polyimide is widely used in high-tech fields because of its excellent performance characteristics. In recent years, the new display technology represented by smartphones with foldable screen has greatly promoted the development of optically transparent polyimide materials. In order to understand the technical condition and future development direction of polyimide patents of foreign companies, this work took KOLON, SKC and their related companies as the research object, and deeply analyzed their polyimide film patents applied in China during 2017 to 2022, including the number of applications, disclosure condition, field distribution, etc. The technical route and layout characteristics of transparent polyimide patents were focused, and the structural formula, preparation methods, key performance of representative transparent polyimide films were respectively introduced in detail. The current technological challenges and future breakthrough directions were also summarized.

Polyimide is widely used in high-tech fields because of its excellent performance characteristics. In recent years, the new display technology represented by smartphones with foldable screen has greatly promoted the development of optically transparent polyimide materials. In order to understand the technical condition and future development direction of polyimide patents of foreign companies, this work took KOLON, SKC and their related companies as the research object, and deeply analyzed their polyimide film patents applied in China during 2017 to 2022, including the number of applications, disclosure condition, field distribution, etc. The technical route and layout characteristics of transparent polyimide patents were focused, and the structural formula, preparation methods, key performance of representative transparent polyimide films were respectively introduced in detail. The current technological challenges and future breakthrough directions were also summarized.

随着光电信息技术的飞速发展,以智能手机、柔性电子器件为代表的新型光电器件日益呈现轻薄化和柔性化的特点。特别是在智能手机领域,自2019年起可折叠屏手机逐渐实现商品化,极大丰富和推动了柔性电子产品在人们生活中的应用。光学玻璃是传统显示器件的盖板材料,而为实现器件的可折叠化、柔性化以及卷曲化,采用具有良好光学透明性和柔韧性的聚合物薄膜来代替硬质玻璃盖板是必然选择[1-2]。因此,高性能光学聚合物薄膜材料成为国内外研究的热点和重点,在柔性电子、新型显示等光电领域具有广阔的应用前景。
聚酰亚胺是一类重要的特种高分子材料,具有优异的耐热、力学、绝缘等特性,被广泛应用于航空、航天、微电子、电子、电气等领域[3-6]。聚酰亚胺通常采用芳香二酐与芳香二胺聚合而成,分子主链中含有大量的芳香苯环结构以及极性亚胺环。传统的聚酰亚胺薄膜呈现为典型的黄色或棕色,常被称为“黄金薄膜”。这主要是由于在聚酰亚胺分子链内部以及分子链之间存在显著的π电子跃迁,由此形成的电荷转移络合物(CTC)导致薄膜呈现特征黄色[7-8]。为消除或淡化薄膜颜色,获得无色透明的光学聚酰亚胺薄膜,国内外研究人员开展了大量研究,解决方法和策略包括:在分子结构中引入强吸电子基团例如三氟甲基来抑制电子跃迁;在主链中引入砜基、醚键等以形成非线性或非共平面结构来减少CTC形成;采用脂环族等非芳香结构来降低共轭π电子的形成等[9-12]
目前,关于透明聚酰亚胺的研究已经取得了较为系统的认识,韩国、日本、美国等国家的聚酰亚胺应用企业已经推出了不同性能的商品化薄膜产品。透明聚酰亚胺薄膜由于具有优异的透光率、突出的热稳定性、良好的力学和加工性能等优点,是光电领域首选的光学聚合物材料,并已广泛应用于柔性显示器件的盖板、触控、基板等[13-14]。国内的透明聚酰亚胺技术较国外存在显著差距,高端产品几乎全部由国外公司所垄断。KOLON和SKC公司是韩国最具代表性的两家聚酰亚胺薄膜生产制造企业,双方均开展了大量透明聚酰亚胺的技术开发工作。目前,韩国KOLON公司推出的商品化的透明聚酰亚胺薄膜产品已经成功用于多款商业化可折叠屏手机,包括华为公司的Mate X系列可折叠手机,是领先的透明聚酰亚胺薄膜生产企业之一。
国外公司长期以来高度重视专利技术的保护与布局,通过对国外先进材料制造公司专利技术的分析解读有助于了解其技术发展趋势和布局特点,对国内科研机构和生产应用企业无疑有重要指导意义[15-16]。国内学者在2017年已针对聚酰亚胺等为代表的特种工程塑料开展相关专利技术分析工作。文献[17-20]先后报道了当时透明聚酰亚胺薄膜的专利态势、国内外的专利布局情况等,不仅充分挖掘和发挥了专利信息的应用价值,而且极大促进了国内相关企业对产业技术动态的及时了解和准确把握。
本文以韩国KOLON、SKC以及由两家公司衍生出的相关公司包括SK新技术(SKI)、SKC-KOLON、聚酰亚胺先端材料(PIAM,又称聚酰亚胺尖端素材)等为研究对象,深入分析其自2017年以来在中国的聚酰亚胺薄膜专利情况,介绍其专利的申请数量、公开情况、领域分布等;重点讨论有关透明聚酰亚胺专利的技术路线和布局方向等,详细阐述代表性透明聚酰亚胺薄膜的分子结构、制备方法以及关键性能,以此了解国外代表性公司的聚酰亚胺薄膜专利技术进展状况及未来发展方向,以期能为国内的聚酰亚胺研究与应用提供借鉴。
为便于文章描述,由韩国KOLON、SKC两家公司衍生出的其他公司均简化视为KOLON与SKC两家公司体系,不再区分具体公司名称。
基于国家知识产权局专利检索服务系统和INCOPAT专利数据库,以关键词、分类号和申请人为检索方式,检索范围涵盖两家公司近5年来(2017年1月起申请至2022年5月前公开的)所有在中国申请的聚酰亚胺薄膜专利(中国台湾地区的专利数据未作统计)。分析样本经人工阅读专利全文进行核实,剔除无关专利后,共统计发明专利数量为136篇。
为对比分析专利的重要性,进一步对两家公司同期在韩国、日本、美国所申请的聚酰亚胺薄膜专利数量进行了统计分析。需要说明的是,由于发明专利公开和实质审查的滞后性,所统计的数据与实际数据之间可能存在一定偏差。
图1为两家公司近5年在中国、韩国、日本、美国的专利申请量分布情况。从图1可以看出,两家公司在韩国本土申请的聚酰亚胺薄膜专利数量最多,达到287篇,占比近50%;在中国申请的专利数量为136篇,位居第二,占比为23.3%;其次为在日本的114篇,占19.6%;而在美国申请的专利数量为46篇,占比仅为7.9%。
两家公司在亚洲三国的聚酰亚胺薄膜专利申请量占到全部数量的90%以上,这也间接表明聚酰亚胺薄膜的研究与应用在亚洲国家最为活跃。同时,中国是除韩国本土之外聚酰亚胺薄膜专利申请量最多的国家,表明了两家公司对中国市场的重视程度。因此,对两家公司在中国申请的专利开展分析不仅能反映其聚酰亚胺薄膜方面的专利布局特点,也能很大程度上说明近年来的技术发展情况。
图2为两家公司近5年在中国的聚酰亚胺薄膜专利申请和授权情况。从图2可以看出,两家公司自2017年后在我国的专利数量一直维持在25篇以上,较之前的年度申请数量有明显增多,市场布局用意愈发明显。在2018年,达到39篇,专利主要涉及透明聚酰亚胺技术或柔性显示,这也与当时透明聚酰亚胺应用市场的发展特点相符合。2019年2月,韩国三星公司和中国华为公司几乎同时推出了各自的可折叠手机Galaxy Fold和Mate X,这两款手机的可折叠屏幕均采用了透明聚酰亚胺薄膜作为盖板材料。由此看出,新型显示技术的发展极大地推动了聚酰亚胺材料的发展,特别是透明聚酰亚胺成为研究与专利申请的热点。两家公司在折叠屏手机上市之前已经完成了相当数量透明聚酰亚胺薄膜的专利申请,反映出其对应用市场的高灵敏性和超前布局能力。
从两家公司近5年所申请专利的授权量数据看,受申请时间较短的限制,目前的专利总授权率仅为13.2%。但检索结果也显示,其余的专利申请或处于实质审查阶段,或处于实质审查前的公开阶段,并未出现任何一件申请被驳回的情形,这充分说明了两家公司在该领域的技术先进性。
图3为两家公司在中国的聚酰亚胺薄膜专利自申请至公开的历时时长情况。历时时长的具体计算方法为某一申请专利自申请日至公开日的总时长。从图3可以看出,两家公司的聚酰亚胺薄膜专利中,自申请至公开的时长在0~6个月的数量最多,这主要归因于我国发明专利的“提前公开”制度,以及两家公司对部分专利申请想在第一时间获得授权保护的用意。
与此同时,自申请至公开的时长在18个月以上的专利申请数量也占较大比例,而且考虑发明专利公开的滞后性,其实际数量必然不少于目前的统计数据。这体现了两家公司在专利申请时对待不同专利采取了不同的申请策略,既对部分专利具有“快保护”的紧迫需求,又充分利用了发明专利公开滞后的规则,对部分专利在申请初期采取了“刻意隐藏”的方式,这有助于避免竞争对手更早地洞察其技术发展路线或市场布局动向。
图4为两家公司近5年在中国申请的聚酰亚胺薄膜专利的应用领域分布情况。从图4可以看出,两家公司在显示领域的专利申请数量最多,占总申请数量的半数以上;其次是电子领域,另外还涉及热控和电池领域。这表明,两家公司的聚酰亚胺薄膜产品主要是针对显示和电子领域开发。
进一步对所申请聚酰亚胺薄膜专利进行分析,可以获得更具体的细分应用领域分布。其中,显示领域的专利内容涵盖了显示用盖板、显示用基板、折叠显示面板3部分,而显示用盖板这一细分应用领域的专利申请量高达55篇,遥遥领先于其他领域,这充分体现了显示盖板用透明聚酰亚胺是近年来的重点发展方向,也是两家公司的优势技术所在。此外,电子领域的专利内容主要包括覆盖膜、低介电膜和其他电子膜,热控领域的专利内容则主要包括石墨膜和导热复合膜。通过专利内容涉及的细分领域,有助于了解两家公司的专利布局,同时反映了近些年应用市场的发展方向。
通过上面两家公司近5年在中国所申请专利的整体情况分析可以发现,显示用透明聚酰亚胺薄膜是其专利保护的重点内容,这也是当前新型显示领域极为重要的发展方向。为此,针对两家公司的透明聚酰亚胺薄膜专利开展了更详细的分析。
图5为两家公司近五年在中国有关透明聚酰亚胺薄膜的专利申请与授权数量情况。从图5可以看出,两家公司自2020年起在中国的透明聚酰亚胺薄膜专利申请数量大幅增加,2020年和2021年的申请数量之和达到44篇,体现了其在近两年对该应用领域的重视。授权情况则与前述图2的情况类似,在此不再赘述。
图6是两家公司近5年在中国所申请透明聚酰亚胺薄膜专利的技术方向情况。对透明聚酰亚胺薄膜专利内容进行分类比较,可大致分为透明聚酰亚胺薄膜及其制备方法、透明聚酰亚胺盖板用功能涂层、透明聚酰亚胺薄膜的工业化制备方法、透明聚酰亚胺基柔性显示面板四大部分。
图6可以看出,有关透明聚酰亚胺薄膜及其制备方法的专利申请量和已授权数量均最多,该类型专利涉及透明聚酰亚胺的基础配方与薄膜制备技术,是企业最主要的专利保护形式。此外,两家公司在盖板用功能涂层、透明薄膜工业化制备、柔性显示面板等重点技术方向均有一定数量的专利布局。这一方面反映出两家公司在透明聚酰亚胺延伸领域的布局全面,另一方面也说明其透明聚酰亚胺技术的先进性,与市场的应用对接比较深入。
在两家公司申请的透明聚酰亚胺薄膜专利中,最具代表性的透明体系为聚酰胺-酰亚胺,由二胺化合物、二酐化合物和二羰基化合物在有机溶剂中聚合得到,其分子结构中主要包含化学式A和化学式B表示的重复单元,如图7所示。
图7中,化学式A中报道较多的结构是由含氟二酐(6FDA)与含氟二胺(TFMB)反应得到;化学式B中报道较多的结构是由联苯二酰氯(BPDC)和/或对苯二酰氯(TPC)与含氟二胺(TFMB)反应得到,具体分子结构式如图8所示。
两家公司在很多篇透明聚酰亚胺薄膜专利中涉及了透明聚酰胺-酰亚胺薄膜的制备方法,从中可以看出对薄膜材料制备技术的重视。为更明确地了解透明聚酰胺-酰亚胺薄膜的制备方法,图9为专利中报道的透明聚酰胺-酰亚胺薄膜所需的制备工艺设备示意图。
为实现具有优异光学性能和力学性能的透明聚酰胺-酰亚胺薄膜的连续化制备,专利所报道的制备步骤具体如下:①在聚合设备中,在有机溶剂中同时或依次混合二胺化合物、二酐化合物和二羰基化合物并反应,以制备聚合物溶液;②将所述聚合物溶液转移到储存罐中;③用惰性气体吹扫上述储存罐;④将储存罐中的聚合物溶液进行浇铸,然后将其加热干燥以制备凝胶膜;⑤在凝胶膜移动时,对其进一步进行升温热处理以制备固化膜;⑥在固化膜移动时,对其进行降温冷却;⑦用卷绕机卷绕上述经冷却的固化膜。
对于可折叠的智能显示产品,在日常使用中需要不断地反复弯折,显示盖板必须同时保持透明性能的稳定、表面的平整且不变形,这对透明盖板材料的力学性能即耐弯折性提出了很高的要求,通常要求大于20万次弯折后无折痕或轻微折痕。通过对两家公司所申请透明聚酰亚胺专利的技术内容分析,可以发现透明薄膜的光学性能、力学性能是技术关键,前者包括可见光区的透光率、雾度、黄度指数,后者包括拉伸强度、模量、伸长率和表面硬度等。表1为韩国KOLON公司网站公开的不同商品化型号透明聚酰亚胺薄膜的产品数据,从表1可以看出KOLON公司所申请的透明聚酰亚胺专利技术与商品化薄膜产品的关键性能有很好一致性。由此看出,国外公司围绕透明聚酰亚胺薄膜开展了全面的技术攻关与专利布局,包括结构配方、制备方法、应用性能等,这为商品化产品的开发与应用奠定了坚实基础。
此外,两家公司在透明聚酰亚胺薄膜专利中特别重视薄膜的模量、表面硬度、耐弯折等性能的研究,这主要与透明聚酰亚胺薄膜在显示盖板中的应用需求有关。图10为基于透明聚酰亚胺盖板的可折叠显示器件的向内和向外弯折的状态示意图。
目前,商品化的透明聚酰亚胺薄膜产品仍不能完全满足柔性可折叠显示设备的苛刻耐弯折要求,在反复弯折后易造成屏幕出现折痕或拱起现象,不利于外观视觉效果和内部器件稳定性,直接影响用户的使用体验和产品的使用寿命。纵观两家公司在中国申请的透明聚酰亚胺薄膜专利技术,相当数量的专利已经围绕可折叠柔性显示面板性开展功能薄膜材料制备和多层面板结构设计等,可预见对盖板用透明薄膜材料耐弯折性能的改善将是其未来亟待解决的重要技术挑战。
(1)韩国KOLON、SKC及其相关公司高度重视在中国的聚酰亚胺薄膜专利申请,主要涵盖显示、电子、热控和电池等应用领域。
(2)以可折叠屏手机为代表的新型显示技术极大推动了透明聚酰亚胺薄膜的发展。两家公司近两年的透明聚酰亚胺专利申请量大幅增加,并拥有大量显示盖板用透明聚酰亚胺薄膜专利,最具代表性的透明体系为聚酰胺-酰亚胺。
(3)两家公司围绕透明聚酰亚胺薄膜的结构配方、制备方法、功能涂层、工业化制备、柔性显示面板等进行了全面的知识产权布局,而透明薄膜耐弯折性能的改善将是未来重要的技术突破方向。
