Based on the 634 MODIS images acquired in 2017, a total of 1 793 internal waves information are extracted. The paper analyzes the spatial distribution of internal waves in three typical regions of the Andaman Sea, quantitatively counts the characteristic parameters such as the length of the leading waves and the area of the wave packets. The potential sources of internal waves are discussed by ray tracing method and estimates the generation period of internal waves. The results show that the internal waves in the northern Andaman Sea have a small spatial scale. The average length of the leading waves is about 107 km, the average wave packet area is about 1 860 km2, and the propagation direction is mainly eastward and southwestward. The average length of the leading waves in the central Andaman Sea is about 133 km, and the average wave packet area is about 3503 km2. More than 70% of the internal waves propagate in the northeast direction. The average length of the leading waves in the northern part of the Sumatra Island is about 131 km, the average wave packet area is about 2 997 km2, and the propagation direction of internal waves is mainly eastward, northeastward and southeastward. There are 7 potential internal wave sources in the Andaman Sea. The internal waves generation period is between 11.5 hours and 13 hours, which has obvious characteristics of half-day period.

本文基于2017年634幅MODIS影像分析了安达曼海3个典型区域的内波空间分布特征,定量统计了波峰线长度、波包面积等特征参数,利用射线追踪法探讨了内波的潜在激发源并推算了内波的生成周期。研究表明,安达曼海北部海域的内波空间尺度较小,前导波波峰线的平均长度约为107 km,平均波包面积约为1 860 km2,内波的传播方向主要为东向以及西南向。安达曼海中部海域内波前导波波峰线的平均长度约为133 km,平均波包面积约为3 503 km2,超过70%的内波沿东偏北方向传播。苏门答腊岛北部海域内波前导波波峰线的平均长度约为131 km,平均波包面积约为2 997 km2,内波的传播方向主要为东向、东北向及东南向。安达曼海共有7个潜在内波激发源,内波的生成时间间隔介于11.5~13 h,具有明显的半日周期特征。

Based on the 634 MODIS images acquired in 2017, a total of 1 793 internal waves information are extracted. The paper analyzes the spatial distribution of internal waves in three typical regions of the Andaman Sea, quantitatively counts the characteristic parameters such as the length of the leading waves and the area of the wave packets. The potential sources of internal waves are discussed by ray tracing method and estimates the generation period of internal waves. The results show that the internal waves in the northern Andaman Sea have a small spatial scale. The average length of the leading waves is about 107 km, the average wave packet area is about 1 860 km2, and the propagation direction is mainly eastward and southwestward. The average length of the leading waves in the central Andaman Sea is about 133 km, and the average wave packet area is about 3503 km2. More than 70% of the internal waves propagate in the northeast direction. The average length of the leading waves in the northern part of the Sumatra Island is about 131 km, the average wave packet area is about 2 997 km2, and the propagation direction of internal waves is mainly eastward, northeastward and southeastward. There are 7 potential internal wave sources in the Andaman Sea. The internal waves generation period is between 11.5 hours and 13 hours, which has obvious characteristics of half-day period.

海洋内波是指在密度稳定层化的海洋中产生、最大振幅出现在海洋内部的波动[1]。其波峰线长度可达几百千米,周期一般为几分钟至几十个小时,目前实测到的最大振幅为240 m[2]。内波的生成与传播,受各种海洋因素的影响,如潮汐、海底地形与海水温、盐度等。安达曼海被认为是世界上观测到内波最多的海域之一[3-4],其具有稳定的海水层结以及特殊的海底地形构造,当受到外界扰动时,内波这种特殊的海洋现象便频繁发生。因此对安达曼海内波的研究极其重要,可减少或避免因海洋内波引起的在资源开发利用、渔业捕捞、海水航运等方面的损失。
安达曼海位于马来半岛、安达曼群岛和尼科巴群岛之间,多年来一直是研究内波的热点区域。1965年Perry和Schimke[5]在安达曼海南部海域进行了第一次海洋内波测量,确认了内波的海面特征。Osborne等[6]在安达曼海南部发现了内孤立波的存在,指出安达曼海的内波具有周期性特征并由半日潮与海底地形相互作用从而扰动斜密层所产生。Alpers等[4]利用ERS-2 SAR遥感图像研究了安达曼海西部内波的产生与演化,指出4个潜在的内波源并解释了内波与内波间的相互作用所产生的相位变化及波长改变等现象。Magalhaes和Da Silva等[7]利用TerraSAR-X影像讨论了在安达曼海十度海峡附近观测到的类似模式2内波的特征与生成机制,它们并不是由正压潮所激发,而是在内波波束与当地等密度线发生相互作用后产生。Zhou等[8]和周礼英[9]分析了2013−2015年的1 000多幅中等分辨率成像光谱仪(MODIS)及SAR影像,获取了安达曼海及其邻近海域内波的时空分布特征。另外,MODIS影像具有覆盖范围大、时间分辨率高等优势,许多学者基于MODIS数据做了大量关于内波的研究。Jackson[3]利用3 581幅内波MODIS真彩色图片研究了全球内波的分布情况,介绍了全球15个海域的内波特征。Bai等[10]利用MODIS影像研究了台湾海峡南部内孤立波的统计特征,确定了两种不同类型的内孤立波,并进一步分析了内波的激发源地。Liu等[11]利用MODIS和SAR数据研究了南海的同一条内波,计算了内波的相速度并指出内波的相速度与沿其路径的水深呈相关关系。孙丽娜等[12]利用MODIS、ENVISAT ASAR等多种遥感数据开展了日本海的内波特征研究,得到了日本海内波空间分布,获取了内波的波峰线长度和传播速度。梅源等[13]利用2013年7月至2014年6月的GF-1和MODIS数据,对比分析了南海东沙岛的同一条内波的参数特征,同时基于高阶非线性薛定谔方程,计算得到了东沙岛所在大陆架附近的内波振幅。史璐等[14]基于2014−2016年的MODIS数据对直布罗陀海峡内波的时空分布规律进行了统计分析,并通过创建MITgcm内波模型,从海面高程、等温线两个方面展现了内波的生成与传播过程。
通过MODIS影像观测海洋内波已经成为一种可靠有效的方法,已有的研究结果表明安达曼海内波的时空分布特性显著且具有半日周期特征,但鲜有学者利用遥感手段针对内波的特征参数分布及生成周期验证进行深入研究。本文基于634幅MODIS影像分析了安达曼海3个典型区域的内波空间分布特征,并定量统计了波峰线长度、波包面积等特征参数,为进一步认识安达曼海的内波提供了新的视角;同时本文确定了安达曼海内波的7个潜在激发源,并验证了此处内波的生成周期具有半日特征,旨在为安达曼海的内波研究及海洋工程建设提供科学帮助。
安达曼海位于印度洋的东北部,在马来半岛、安达曼群岛、尼科巴群岛和苏门答腊岛之间。本文研究范围包括整个安达曼海,其西部海底地形较为复杂,水深变化明显;中部相对较为平缓,水深介于1 000~3 500 m;北部存在较陡峭的大陆架,自东往西最大急剧下降可达2 000 m;东部靠马来西亚半岛一侧多岛屿、暗礁。
遥感数据采用MODIS影像,其刈幅宽度可达2 330 km,可以提供分辨率分别为1 000 m、500 m以及250 m的离散波段图像。内波在MODIS图像中表现为直线或曲线状亮暗相间的条纹,同时内波以波包形式传播,波包中孤立子波峰线和孤立波间距沿传播方向呈现递减趋势[15]。如表1所示,本文共收集了634景分辨率为250 m的MODIS影像。本文关于安达曼海水深数据的信息取自美国国家海洋与大气管理局(NOAA)提供的ETOPO模型[16]
基于预处理后的遥感影像,进行内波特征信息提取,包括内波位置、波峰线长度、波包面积、传播方向等,并采用数值统计的方法对内波的特征参数分布进行分析。同时本文根据波峰线提取结果,利用射线追踪法[9]拟合得到多个圆心,结合海底地形等信息,将圆心进行组合并确定为内波的发生源。针对不同区域的内波,利用单幅MODIS影像可包含多个同源内波波包的特性,计算内波的传播速度与传播时间,之后利用遥感影像获取时间,推算内波的生成时间,从而得到不同波包的生成时间间隔。内波传播速度与振幅计算方法分别采用多时相影像法(Multi-Temporal Images,MTI)[17-19]与非线性薛定谔方程[20]
本文总共收集筛选得到634景覆盖安达曼海的MODIS图像,解译影像中内波的位置信息,进而对其空间分布特征进行统计分析。共提取获得1 793条内波,得到内波空间分布(图1)。由图1可知,内波活动几乎覆盖整个安达曼海,主要活动区域为安达曼海北部海域及北部大陆架、中部海域以及苏门答腊岛以北海域。其中,安达曼海北部区域的内波空间尺度相对较小,生存周期较短,而苏门答腊岛北部与安达曼海中部的内波活动频繁,空间尺度较大。值得注意的是,在安达曼海中部深水区很少探测到内波,这可能与此处的内波生成周期与卫星成像周期相重合有关。
图1可知,安达曼海内波的主要活动区域可分为安达曼海北部、安达曼海中部以及苏门答腊岛北部海域。为进一步分析内波的空间分布特征,本文共筛选获取285个内波波包,利用ArcGIS等软件测量得到内波前导波波峰线长度、波包面积及传播方向。
图2a显示了安达曼海北部海域存在大量特征显著的内波群(以黑色矩形框标出,包括安达曼北部大陆架以及缅甸河口)。这些内波群主要分为两部分:一部分为空间尺度较小的内波,它们广泛分布于安达曼海北部水深小于50 m的大陆架上,其波峰线长度大致在30~80 km之间,波包间距通常小于25 km,主要向东北方向传播,最北端距离缅甸沿岸约30 km处;第二部分主要为在科科海峡产生的内波,它们穿越安达曼海北部深海区域往东向岸传播。内波在传播过程中遇到了地形剧烈变化约2 000 m的大陆架,因此产生并形成一个强烈反射波,它们主要往西南方向的安达曼群岛传播,最终耗散于岸边。
安达曼海北部海域内波的部分特征参数如表2所示。在遥感影像上,内波以内孤立波列的形式存在,波包中前导波的平均长度约为107 km,平均波包面积约为1 860 km2。由图2可知,此处内波的传播方向主要为东向以及西南向,其中沿西南方向传播的内波占比达到35%。前导波波峰线长度集中于50~150 km,观测比例超过70%。内波波包面积分布较为均匀,面积介于500~1 000 km2、1 500~2 000 km2的波包观测比例最高,分别为23.91%、21.74%。
图3展示了安达曼海北部的两个典型内波系统,影像获取时间为2017年4月26日04:25(UTC)。图中共有3个向东南方向传播的内波波包,它们均生成于科科海峡,波包间距约为97 km,波形基本保持一致。但内波振幅随着传播过程逐渐减小,利用非线性薛定谔方程计算得到波包A、B、C的振幅逐渐减小,分别约为78.6 m、54.6 m、25.6 m。另外可清晰观察到2个于安达曼海北部大陆架产生并往西南方向传播的波包,其传播速度约为2.25 m/s。
MODIS影像调查结果显示在安达曼海中部存在大量规律明显、特征一致的内波,它们起源于十度海峡或尼科巴群岛中间的海槽。如图4a所示,内波生成后主要往东向马来半岛传播,不同波源产生的内波在穿越深海到达陆架地区后相互碰撞叠加,最终在深度小于50 m的陆架浅滩破碎耗散。此区域内波的空间尺度较大,前导波波峰线最长可达到350 km,生成周期规律性显著,在一幅MODIS影像上,最多可以观察到5~6个连续的内波波包。安达曼海中部海域内波前导波波峰线的平均长度约为133 km,平均波包面积约为3 503 km2,但对于较为罕见的大型波包,其波峰线长度最大可达到350 km,面积超过12 000 km2。在靠近安达曼海东部的陆架附近,内波遇到水下障碍而减速,波包间距一般不超过20 km。
图4可知,前导波波峰线长度介于50~100 km的内波占比高达35%,超过300 km的内波观测比例不足5%。波包面积超过8 000 km2的内波占比为9.8%,而面积介于1 000~4 000 km2的内波波包接近50%。安达曼海中部海域内波传播方向统计结果如图4d所示,超过70%的内波沿东偏北方向传播。
在安达曼海南部同样存在显著的内波活动,其广泛分布于苏门答腊岛北部的浅海区域。这些内波产生于苏门答腊岛西北部的海峡,其中一部分向东北方向传播,最终与安达曼海中部海域的内波相互作用耗散于沿岸地区。另一部分内波沿东南方向传播,其传播距离与生存时间较短。受水深与复杂海底地形的影响,这个区域观察到的内波在传播过程中,其形状与传播速度变化更为明显。苏门答腊岛北部内波前导波波峰线的平均长度约为131 km,平均波包面积约为2 997 km2图5展示了此处内波特征参数统计结果,大部分内波前导波波峰线长度介于50~200 km,其观测比例接近70%。另外,波包面积超过8 000 km2的内波占比为10%,而面积介于1 000~4 000 km2的内波波包接近60%。统计结果显示,约有50%的内波向东传播,与此同时,向东北及东南方向传播的内波均略高于20%。
本文利用射线追踪法确定了安达曼海的7个内波源,表3列举了内波源的详细位置。图6为研究区域的三维深度地形图,内波生成源被标记为S1−S7。如图所示在安达曼群岛−尼科巴群岛附近并排存在6个内波源,另外在安达曼海北部的大陆架存在一个显著的内波源。
已有研究结果表明,安达曼海内波的生成机制主要为潮汐与水下山体相互作用的背风波机制[21],因此内波的生成周期基本由潮汐周期所决定。本文利用遥感手段推算了同源内波的生成时间间隔,以验证其生成周期是否具有半日特征。图7展示了安达曼海中部海域的一个大型内波系统,数据获取时间为2017年3月13日07:00(UTC)。图中共有4个较为明显的内波波包,它们产生于卡尔尼科巴岛与特蕾莎岛之间,沿着深海盆地向东传播,最终耗散于东部大陆架。在传播过程中,其波包面积与波峰线长度不断增大,而波包间距变化较小,这反映了不同波包的传播速度差异较小。利用MTI方法计算得到内波传播速度约为2.36 m/s。表4展示了内波的传播时间与生成时间,结果表明该内波系统具有明显的周期性,内波生成时间间隔约为12 h,与半日潮的潮汐周期基本吻合。
图8为2017年3月11日04:15(UTC)获取的MODIS影像,展示了苏门答腊岛北部海域的内波特征。图中共有3个比较清晰的内波波包,其空间尺度随传播过程变化明显,前导波波峰线长度由180 km逐步增加至320 km。内波自生成后传播距离达到330 km,传播速度约为2.33 m/s。表5展示了内波的传播时间与生成时间,内波生成时间间隔约为12.5 h。
图9展示了安达曼海北部海域的两个不同内波系统,图9a中的内波起源于安达曼海北部大陆架,向西南方向传播并最终在北安达曼岛附近破碎,内波传播速度约为2.22 m/s,波包A与波包B的生成时间间隔为12.25 h;图9b获取时间为2017年3月8日04:10(UTC),内波起源于科科海峡,其传播速度约为2.15 m/s,波包A与波包B之间生成时间间隔约为12 h,结果表明这两个内波系统的生成周期也与半日潮周期相对应。
本文基于所获取的MODIS数据分析了安达曼海不同海域的内波生成周期,其中最小时间间隔为11小时30分钟,最大时间间隔为13 h,结果表明本文观测到的内波几乎全部具有半日周期特征,其从侧面验证了安达曼海的内波主要由半日潮所扰动产生。值得注意的是内波在传播过程中,由于受到地形、水深等影响,其传播速度会发生变化,导致实际传播时间与计算值存在较小差异,但并不影响结果分析。
本文基于2017年634幅MODIS影像分析了安达曼海3个典型区域的内波空间分布特征,定量统计了波峰线长度、波包面积及传播方向,利用射线追踪法确定了安达曼海内波的7个潜在激发源,并利用遥感手段验证了此处内波的生成周期具有半日特征。
统计结果表明,内波活动几乎覆盖整个安达曼海,其中安达曼海北部海域内波的生存周期较短,内波的传播方向主要为东向以及西南向,前导波波峰线长度主要集中于50~150 km,内波平均波包面积约为1 860 km2;安达曼海中部海域的内波空间尺度较大,前导波波峰线长度介于50~100 km的内波占比高达35%,波包面积介于1 000~4 000 km2的内波占比接近50%,超过70%的内波沿东偏北方向传播;苏门答腊岛北部海域内波前导波波峰线的平均长度约为131 km,平均波包面积约为2 997 km2,内波的传播方向主要为东向、东南向及东北向。安达曼海共有7个内波激发源,分别位于科科海峡、安达曼海北部大陆架、十度海峡、卡尔尼科巴岛和特蕾莎岛之间水域、特蕾莎岛和卡彻尔岛之间水域、卡彻尔岛和小尼科巴之间水域以及苏门答腊岛西北部浅滩。结合遥感影像获取时间与内波传播时间进行分析,本文观察到的内波生成时间间隔介于11.5~13 h,具有明显的半日周期特征,从侧面验证了安达曼海内波主要由半日潮所扰动产生。
综上,在安达曼海存在众多特征显著的内波。未来的研究任务是确定内波空间参数的时间变化性及它们与潮汐相位的关系,并通过卫星测量、现场观测和建模相结合,探讨内波的生成与传播机制。
