The rapid development of intelligent technologies is propelling humanity toward an intelligent society, bringing about profound changes in production, lifestyle, organizational structures, and social order. These transformations have given rise to numerous new challenges, making the governance of intelligent society an urgent research agenda. While existing studies have addressed key risks associated with intelligent technologies—including algorithmic abuse, the digital divide, and issues of trust and fatigue—relatively less attention has been paid to the transformative impact of intelligent recommendation systems on public information exposure, cognitive patterns, and behavioral preferences. The widespread use of personalized recommendations often results in individuals being repeatedly exposed to homogeneous content, leading to the formation of information cocoons, exacerbating cognitive polarization, and increasing the risk of societal fragmentation. This presents a significant challenge for intelligent social governance.

Traditional analyses of public cognition and attitude formation are often based on the rational actor model, assuming that individuals make decisions through cost-benefit calculations. However, such perspectives tend to overlook the psychological and emotional mechanisms involved in information processing. Recent studies from the fields of psychology and behavioral science have begun to explore how emotional preferences, identity, ideology, and personality traits influence the relationship between information exposure and cognitive polarization. Nevertheless, little attention has been given to the role of perceived external social environments, especially perceptions of societal threats. Psychological research indicates that perceived threats in the social environment significantly shape individual cognition and attitudes. In today’s digital landscape, where intelligent technologies dominate, threat-inducing and emotionally charged content is more likely to attract attention and be widely disseminated. This can amplify public anxiety and perceptions of insecurity, thereby intensifying cognitive polarization. Accordingly, this study seeks to bridge the gap by examining how threat perceptions and information exposure interact to influence public cognitive polarization.

This paper introduces the perspective of external threat situations and explores how they, together with information exposure, jointly influence public cognitive polarization. Using the application of facial recognition technology in “pedestrian red-light violation exposure” as a case study, this research constructs a 2 (no threat situation vs. threat situation)×2 (homogeneous information vs. heterogeneous information) between-subjects experiment. A total of 1,281 participants were recruited online for the experiment. The results indicate that exposure to homogeneous information strengthens the public’s original views, thereby intensifying cognitive polarization, while exposure to heterogeneous information weakens the public’s original views, reducing cognitive polarization. Compared to the absence of external threat situations, threat situations significantly weaken the depolarization effect brought about by exposure to heterogeneous information. Additionally, for individuals of different genders and average annual incomes, threat situations play varying roles in the process by which information exposure influences polarization.

The findings demonstrate that the external environment in which the public is situated, including threat perceptions caused by social unrest, economic crises, crime, disease risks, and unexpected events, may have a significant impact on changes in cognitive polarization during information exposure. This deserves further attention and research. Moreover, when the government addresses viewpoint polarization in cyberspace, it should not only promote the public’s exposure to more heterogeneous information that challenges their original views and encourages diverse thinking, but also pay attention to the external environment the public faces. This can help reduce public anxiety and threat perception, thereby enhancing the role of heterogeneous information in mitigating viewpoint polarization.

Outrage is highly engaging and need not be accurate to achieve its communicative goals, making it an attractive signal to embed in misinformation. In eight studies that used US data from Facebook (1,063,298 links) and Twitter (44,529 tweets, 24,007 users) and two behavioral experiments (1475 participants), we show that (i) misinformation sources evoke more outrage than do trustworthy sources; (ii) outrage facilitates the sharing of misinformation at least as strongly as sharing of trustworthy news; and (iii) users are more willing to share outrage-evoking misinformation without reading it first. Consequently, outrage-evoking misinformation may be difficult to mitigate with interventions that assume users want to share accurate information.), Reference(id=1317436265444786673, tenantId=1146029695717560320, journalId=1308397381743640680, articleId=1317436248147476889, doi=null, pmid=null, pmcid=null, year=2022, volume=null, issue=null, pageStart=183, pageEnd=null, url=null, language=null, rfNumber=[11], rfOrder=16, authorNames=Arora S D, Singh G P, Chakraborty A, journalName=Technological Forecasting and Social Change, refType=null, unstructuredReference=Arora S D, Singh G P, Chakraborty A, et al. Experiments 1, 3, 4 and 5 demonstrated that college students who heard a violent song felt more hostile than those who heard a similar but nonviolent song. Experiments 2-5 demonstrated a similar increase in aggressive thoughts. These effects replicated across songs and song types (e.g., rock, humorous, nonhumorous). Experiments 3-5 also demonstrated that trait hostility was positively related to state hostility but did not moderate the song lyric effects. Theoretically guided by the Extended Parallel Process Model (EPPM; a fear appeal theory), the RBD scale was designed to work in conjunction with an easy-to-use formula to determine which types of health risk messages would be most appropriate for a given individual or audience. Because some health risk messages promote behavior change and others backfire, this type of scale offers guidance to practitioners on how to develop the best persuasive message possible to motivate healthy behaviors. The results of the study demonstrate the RBD scale to have a high degree of content, construct, and predictive validity. Rethinking political polarization[J]. Political Science Quarterly, 2023, 138(3): 335-359., articleTitle=Rethinking political polarization, refAbstract=The comparative study of political polarization has been central to current debates on the global crisis of democracy. It has been built on uncertain conceptual foundations, though. Established uses of the concept lack a distinctive semantic core as multiple meanings compete against each other. On the basis of a broad reading of the comparative literature, I seek to circumscribe the use and reconstruct the core of political polarization as an instance of extraordinary democratic conflict. In a first step, I delineate the basic parameters of debate by distinguishing between cluster-analytic and conflict-analytic approaches and by specifying the generic type of political conflict that characterizes the polarization of democratic polities. In a second step, I argue for political intolerance as the defining trait of both ideological and social polarization. In a final step, I introduce a third, democratic dimension into the debate: the breakdown of basic democratic trust that leads actors to view their adversaries as “enemies of democracy.” Such perceptions spell the end of democratic consolidation. When played among “democratic enemies,” democracy stops being “the only game in town.”), Reference(id=1317436266841489923, tenantId=1146029695717560320, journalId=1308397381743640680, articleId=1317436248147476889, doi=10.1017/eis.2020.14, pmid=null, pmcid=null, year=2021, volume=6, issue=1, pageStart=44, pageEnd=65, url=https://www.cambridge.org/core/product/identifier/S2057563720000140/type/journal_article, language=null, rfNumber=[25], rfOrder=34, authorNames=Stevens D, Bulmer S, Banducci S, journalName=European Journal of International Security, refType=null, unstructuredReference=Stevens D, Bulmer S, Banducci S, et al. Social class, sense of control, and social explanation[J]. Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, 2009, 97(6): 992., articleTitle=Social class, sense of control, and social explanation, refAbstract=Lower social class is associated with diminished resources and perceived subordinate rank. On the basis of this analysis, the authors predicted that social class would be closely associated with a reduced sense of personal control and that this association would explain why lower class individuals favor contextual over dispositional explanations of social events. Across 4 studies, lower social class individuals, as measured by subjective socioeconomic status (SES), endorsed contextual explanations of economic trends, broad social outcomes, and emotion. Across studies, the sense of control mediated the relation between subjective SES and contextual explanations, and this association was independent of objective SES, ethnicity, political ideology, and self-serving biases. Finally, experimentally inducing a higher sense of control attenuated the tendency for lower subjective SES individuals to make more contextual explanations (Study 4). Implications for future research on social class as well as theoretical distinctions between objective SES and subjective SES are discussed.), Reference(id=1317436267005067781, tenantId=1146029695717560320, journalId=1308397381743640680, articleId=1317436248147476889, doi=10.1177/0013164414548576, pmid=29795825, pmcid=null, year=2015, volume=75, issue=3, pageStart=365, pageEnd=388, url=null, language=null, rfNumber=[27], rfOrder=36, authorNames=Ho A D, Yu C C, journalName=Educational and Psychological Measurement, refType=null, unstructuredReference=Ho A D, Yu C C. Educational and Psychological Measurement, 2015, 75(3): 365-388., articleTitle=Descriptive statistics for modern test score distributions: Skewness, kurtosis, discreteness, and ceiling effects, refAbstract=Many statistical analyses benefit from the assumption that unconditional or conditional distributions are continuous and normal. More than 50 years ago in this journal, Lord and Cook chronicled departures from normality in educational tests, and Micerri similarly showed that the normality assumption is met rarely in educational and psychological practice. In this article, the authors extend these previous analyses to state-level educational test score distributions that are an increasingly common target of high-stakes analysis and interpretation. Among 504 scale-score and raw-score distributions from state testing programs from recent years, nonnormal distributions are common and are often associated with particular state programs. The authors explain how scaling procedures from item response theory lead to nonnormal distributions as well as unusual patterns of discreteness. The authors recommend that distributional descriptive statistics be calculated routinely to inform model selection for large-scale test score data, and they illustrate consequences of nonnormality using sensitivity studies that compare baseline results to those from normalized score scales.), Reference(id=1317436267076370950, tenantId=1146029695717560320, journalId=1308397381743640680, articleId=1317436248147476889, doi=null, pmid=null, pmcid=null, year=2024, volume=40, issue=10, pageStart=118, pageEnd=132, url=null, language=null, rfNumber=[28], rfOrder=37, authorNames=朱旭峰, 楼闻佳, journalName=管理世界, refType=null, unstructuredReference=朱旭峰, 楼闻佳. 管理世界, 2024, 40(10): 118-132., articleTitle=公众的风险感知与新兴技术接受度——面向人脸识别技术的调查实验研究, refAbstract=null), Reference(id=1317436267181228551, tenantId=1146029695717560320, journalId=1308397381743640680, articleId=1317436248147476889, doi=null, pmid=null, pmcid=null, year=2024, volume=40, issue=10, pageStart=118, pageEnd=132, url=null, language=null, rfNumber=[28], rfOrder=38, authorNames=Zhu X F, Lou W J, journalName=Journal of Management World, refType=null, unstructuredReference=Zhu X F, Lou W J. 支持类 A1:那些闯红灯的人就是图方便,把自己的生命安全,别人的生命安全都不当回事。
