Over the past few decades, the probability of climate anomalies has increased significantly, and large-scale extreme warming events have occurred globally. Climate change has gradually become a severe challenge for humanity, drawing widespread attention from society. Although climate change has increasingly become a consensus within the scientific community in recent decades, skepticism about its authenticity still exists in some parts of society. Many scholars attribute climate skepticism to a lack of scientific knowledge. Others argue that cultural factors, such as values and ideologies, play a more critical role. Addressing climate change is an urgent task that requires collective action from all members of society. This study aims to investigate whether citizens’ scientific literacy significantly influences their perception of climate change. The Science Comprehension Theory posits that scientific literacy facilitates the development of a scientific understanding of climate change, with scientific knowledge playing a key role. On the other hand, the Cultural Cognition Theory emphasizes that sociocultural factors, such as values and ideologies, are crucial in shaping individuals’ per-ceptions of climate change. It argues that citizens’ indifference to climate change and their non-scientific perceptions are not necessarily caused by a lack of scientific knowledge. This study draws on data from the 2023 Science, Technology and Society Barometer Survey, a nationally representative survey in China, to analyze Chinese citizens’ attitudes and perceptions. After processing the data and removing missing samples, the study includes 2986 valid samples. An ordered logistic regression model is employed to conduct an empirical analysis of the relationship between scientific literacy and individuals’ perceptions of climate change and to explore the mechanisms underlying this relationship. The findings demonstrate that scientific literacy has a significant positive impact on individuals’ perceptions of climate change. Mechanism analysis reveals that improvements in scientific literacy positively influence perceptions of climate change by enhancing scientific interest, trust in science, and trust in scientists. Heterogeneity analysis indicates that the impact of scientific literacy varies across individual characteristics, such as gender, educational attainment, and age. Specifically, the positive effect of scientific literacy on climate change perception is stronger for men than for women, for individuals with a bachelor’s degree or higher compared to those with lower education levels, and for younger individuals compared to older ones. At the regional level, scientific literacy positively influences climate change perceptions in eastern, central, and western regions of China. The magnitude of this effect is highest in the eastern region, followed by the western and central regions. However, the positive influence of scientific literacy in the northeastern region is not statistically significant. These findings suggest that the impact of scientific literacy on citizens’ perceptions of climate change is complex, requiring attention to individual heterogeneity and regional differences. The results of the empirical analysis validate and enrich the explanatory power of the Science Comprehension Theory, emphasizing the critical role of scientific literacy in shaping individuals’ perceptions of climate change. To address climate change, It is necessary to strengthen climate change education, promote the concept of low-carbon lifestyles, and build professional scientific communities to advance science popularization, improve citizens' scientific literacy, and enhance their trust in science. Furthermore, it is essential to translate awareness into practice, guiding behavioral changes to tackle climate change as a global issue. This study underscores the importance of scientific knowledge and literacy in forming individuals’ perceptions of climate change. By utilizing nationally representative data from Chinese citizens, it validates and enriches the Science Comprehension Theory while addressing gaps in related research in China. Although some studies downplay the explanatory power of scientific knowledge and literacy, emphasizing the role of values, ideologies, and religious beliefs in shaping perceptions of climate change, this study demonstrates that, even when sociocultural factors play a role, scientific literacy remains a robust explanatory factor. Enhancing citizens’ scientific literacy is an essential approach to addressing climate change.

To test this claim, we administered two detailed assessments about the practices of science to a demographically representative sample of the US public (= 1500), along with questions about the acceptance of evolution, climate change, and vaccines. Participants' political and religious views predicted their acceptance of scientific claims, as in prior work. But a greater knowledge of the nature of science and a more mature view of how to mitigate scientific disagreements each related positively to acceptance. Importantly, the positive effect of scientific thinking on acceptance held regardless of participants' political ideology or religiosity. At present, rejection of scientific findings by the U.S. public is more prevalent on the political right than the left. Yet the cognitive mechanisms driving rejection of science, such as the superficial processing of evidence toward the desired interpretation, are found regardless of political orientation. General education and scientific literacy do not mitigate rejection of science but, rather, increase the polarization of opinions along partisan lines. In contrast, specific knowledge about the mechanisms underlying a scientific result—such as human-made climate change—can increase the acceptance of that result.), Reference(id=1317436243672154492, tenantId=1146029695717560320, journalId=1308397381743640680, articleId=1317436231777108293, doi=10.1038/nclimate2943, pmid=null, pmcid=null, year=2016, volume=6, issue=6, pageStart=622, pageEnd=626, url=null, language=null, rfNumber=[10], rfOrder=10, authorNames=Hornsey M J, Harris E A, Bain P G, journalName=Nature Climate Change, refType=null, unstructuredReference=Hornsey M J, Harris E A, Bain P G, et al. Here we present a comprehensive theoretical framework of (anti)science belief formation and updating to account for the psychological factors that influence the acceptance or rejection of scientific messages. We experimentally investigated, across 12 countries (N = 6,816), the effectiveness of six inoculation strategies targeting these factors—scientific consensus, trust in scientists, transparent communication, moralization of climate action, accuracy and positive emotions—to fight real-world disinformation about climate science and mitigation actions. While exposure to disinformation had strong detrimental effects on participants’ climate change beliefs (δ = −0.16), affect towards climate mitigation action (δ = −0.33), ability to detect disinformation (δ = −0.14) and pro-environmental behaviour (δ = −0.24), we found almost no evidence for protective effects of the inoculations (all δ < 0.20). For example, studies find that exposure to misinformation can undermine vaccination uptake and compliance with public-health guidelines. As research on the science of misinformation is rapidly emerging, this conceptual Review summarizes what we know along three key dimensions of the infodemic: susceptibility, spread, and immunization. Extant research is evaluated on the questions of why (some) people are (more) susceptible to misinformation, how misinformation spreads in online social networks, and which interventions can help to boost psychological immunity to misinformation. Gaining trust as well as respect in communicating to motivated audiences about science topics[J]. Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, 2014, 111(supplement_4): 13593-13597., articleTitle=Gaining trust as well as respect in communicating to motivated audiences about science topics, refAbstract=Expertise is a prerequisite for communicator credibility, entailing the knowledge and ability to be accurate. Trust also is essential to communicator credibility. Audiences view trustworthiness as the motivation to be truthful. Identifying whom to trust follows systematic principles. People decide quickly another’s apparent intent: Who is friend or foe, on their side or not, or a cooperator or competitor. Those seemingly on their side are deemed warm (friendly, trustworthy). People then decide whether the other is competent to enact those intents. Perception of scientists, like other social perceptions, involves inferring both their apparent intent (warmth) and capability (competence). To illustrate, we polled adults online about typical American jobs, rated as American society views them, on warmth and competence dimensions, as well as relevant emotions. Ambivalently perceived high-competence but low-warmth, “envied” professions included lawyers, chief executive officers, engineers, accountants, scientists, and researchers. Being seen as competent but cold might not seem problematic until one recalls that communicator credibility requires not just status and expertise but also trustworthiness (warmth). Other research indicates the risk from being enviable. Turning to a case study of scientific communication, another online sample of adults described public attitudes toward climate scientists specifically. Although distrust is low, the apparent motive to gain research money is distrusted. The literature on climate science communicators agrees that the public trusts impartiality, not persuasive agendas. Overall, communicator credibility needs to address both expertise and trustworthiness. Scientists have earned audiences’ respect, but not necessarily their trust. Discussing, teaching, and sharing information can earn trust to show scientists’ trustworthy intentions.), Reference(id=1317436245265990030, tenantId=1146029695717560320, journalId=1308397381743640680, articleId=1317436231777108293, doi=10.1038/s41467-023-42729-x, pmid=37945560, pmcid=null, year=2023, volume=14, issue=1, pageStart=7241, pageEnd=null, url=null, language=null, rfNumber=[27], rfOrder=28, authorNames=Spektor M, Fasolin G N, Camargo J, journalName=Nature Communications, refType=null, unstructuredReference=Spektor M, Fasolin G N, Camargo J. Climate change beliefs and their correlates in Latin America[J]. Nature Communications, 2023, 14(1): 7241., articleTitle=Climate change beliefs and their correlates in Latin America, refAbstract=The ability of climate skeptics to block climate action depends on prevailing beliefs among the public. Research in advanced democracies has shown skepticism about the existence, the causes, and the consequences of climate change to be associated with socio-demographic features and political ideology. Yet, little is known about climate-related beliefs elsewhere. We address this gap by mapping beliefs in climate change and their correlates in Latin America. We show skepticism over the existence and anthropogenic origins of climate change to be limited, but identify a high number of skeptics around the severity of its consequences. Furthermore, we show skepticism to be correlated with psychological rather than socio-political factors: individualistic worldviews in particular drive disbelief in the severe consequences of climate change, a worrying finding in contexts where social trust is low. These findings offer a starting point for better addressing the constraining effects of climate skepticism in the Global South.© 2023. Ten-year panel data confirm generation gap but climate beliefs increase at similar rates across ages[J]. Nature Communications, 2021, 12(1): 4038., articleTitle=Ten-year panel data confirm generation gap but climate beliefs increase at similar rates across ages, refAbstract=Accumulating evidence indicates that climate change awareness and concern has increased globally, but commentators suggest a climate change generation gap whereby younger people care more about climate change than older people. Here we use a decade of panel data from 56,513 New Zealanders to test whether belief that "Climate change is real" and "Climate change is caused by humans" increased over the 2009-2018 period; and whether changes are uniform across 12 five-year birth cohorts spanning those born from 1936 to 1995. Results confirm a generation gap in mean (intercept) climate change beliefs but not in over-time increase (slope). The generation gap occurs because older cohorts started from a lower initial belief level (circa 2009), but all age cohorts increased their belief level at a similar rate over the last decade; and these results were not qualified by respondents' gender. The findings offer hope for collective action that bridges efforts across generations.), Reference(id=1317436247333781908, tenantId=1146029695717560320, journalId=1308397381743640680, articleId=1317436231777108293, doi=10.1073/pnas.1906589116, pmid=null, pmcid=null, year=2019, volume=116, issue=30, pageStart=14804, pageEnd=14805, url=https://pnas.org/doi/full/10.1073/pnas.1906589116, language=null, rfNumber=[32], rfOrder=34, authorNames=Goldberg M H, van der Linden S, Maibach E, journalName=Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, refType=null, unstructuredReference=Goldberg M H, van der Linden S, Maibach E, et al. Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, 2019, 116(30): 14804-14805., articleTitle=Discussing global warming leads to greater acceptance of climate science, refAbstract=Climate change is an urgent global issue, with demands for personal, collective, and governmental action. Although a large body of research has investigated the influence of communication on public engagement with climate change, few studies have investigated the role of interpersonal discussion. Here we use panel data with 2 time points to investigate the role of climate conversations in shaping beliefs and feelings about global warming. We find evidence of reciprocal causality. That is, discussing global warming with friends and family leads people to learn influential facts, such as the scientific consensus that human-caused global warming is happening. In turn, stronger perceptions of scientific agreement increase beliefs that climate change is happening and human-caused, as well as worry about climate change. When assessing the reverse causal direction, we find that knowing the scientific consensus further leads to increases in global warming discussion. These findings suggest that climate conversations with friends and family enter people into a proclimate social feedback loop.), Reference(id=1317436247417667989, tenantId=1146029695717560320, journalId=1308397381743640680, articleId=1317436231777108293, doi=10.1038/s41558-023-01875-2, pmid=null, pmcid=null, year=2023, volume=13, issue=12, pageStart=1274, pageEnd=1275, url=null, language=null, rfNumber=[33], rfOrder=35, authorNames=Svarstad H, Jornet A, Peters G P, journalName=Nature Climate Change, refType=null, unstructuredReference=Svarstad H, Jornet A, Peters G P, et al. Discrepancy in scientific authority and media visibility of climate change scientists and contrarians[J]. Nature Communications, 2019, 10(1): 3502., articleTitle=Discrepancy in scientific authority and media visibility of climate change scientists and contrarians, refAbstract=We juxtapose 386 prominent contrarians with 386 expert scientists by tracking their digital footprints across ∼200,000 research publications and ∼100,000 English-language digital and print media articles on climate change. Projecting these individuals across the same backdrop facilitates quantifying disparities in media visibility and scientific authority, and identifying organization patterns within their association networks. Here we show via direct comparison that contrarians are featured in 49% more media articles than scientists. Yet when comparing visibility in mainstream media sources only, we observe just a 1% excess visibility, which objectively demonstrates the crowding out of professional mainstream sources by the proliferation of new media sources, many of which contribute to the production and consumption of climate change disinformation at scale. These results demonstrate why climate scientists should increasingly exert their authority in scientific and public discourse, and why professional journalists and editors should adjust the disproportionate attention given to contrarians.)], funds=[Fund(id=1317436240564175216, tenantId=1146029695717560320, journalId=1308397381743640680, articleId=1317436231777108293, awardId=21ZDA017, language=CN, fundingSource=国家社会科学基金重大项目(21ZDA017), fundOrder=null, country=null), Fund(id=1317436240681615729, tenantId=1146029695717560320, journalId=1308397381743640680, articleId=1317436231777108293, awardId=KXYJS2024009, language=CN, fundingSource=中国科协2024年度研究生科普能力提升项目(KXYJS2024009), fundOrder=null, country=null)], companyList=[AuthorCompany(id=1317436235568759115, tenantId=1146029695717560320, journalId=1308397381743640680, articleId=1317436231777108293, xref=null, ext=[AuthorCompanyExt(id=1317436235577147724, tenantId=1146029695717560320, journalId=1308397381743640680, articleId=1317436231777108293, companyId=1317436235568759115, language=EN, country=null, province=null, city=null, postcode=null, companyName=null, departmentName=null, remark=School of Social Science, Tsinghua University, Beijing 100084, China), AuthorCompanyExt(id=1317436235585536333, tenantId=1146029695717560320, journalId=1308397381743640680, articleId=1317436231777108293, companyId=1317436235568759115, language=CN, country=null, province=null, city=null, postcode=null, companyName=null, departmentName=null, remark=清华大学社会科学学院, 北京 100084)])], figs=[ArticleFig(id=1317436238899036510, tenantId=1146029695717560320, journalId=1308397381743640680, articleId=1317436231777108293, language=EN, label=Figure 1, caption=Theoretical analysis framework, figureFileSmall=Zn04V3tVrpyX95YXm0PjJQ==, figureFileBig=SGnbKvCh2Le4XLk7t6asRA==, tableContent=null), ArticleFig(id=1317436238970339679, tenantId=1146029695717560320, journalId=1308397381743640680, articleId=1317436231777108293, language=CN, label=图1, caption=理论框架图, figureFileSmall=Zn04V3tVrpyX95YXm0PjJQ==, figureFileBig=SGnbKvCh2Le4XLk7t6asRA==, tableContent=null), ArticleFig(id=1317436239209415008, tenantId=1146029695717560320, journalId=1308397381743640680, articleId=1317436231777108293, language=EN, label=Table 1, caption=

${Y}_{i}=\alpha {X}_{i}+\beta {Z}_{i}+{\epsilon }_{i}$
