There is a significant disconnection between the richness of data and the effectiveness of decision-making in current marine observation practices. This study argues that the root cause lies in the “ontological” bias and “methodological” mismatch in the logic that guides observation design. We first examine the “uniformity assumption” that views the ocean as a spatially homogeneous and temporally gradual system. Based on the “land-sea heterogeneity isomorphism” framework, we demonstrate that the ocean is essentially a heterogeneous landscape dominated by key dynamic processes, characterized by “resource-rich areas”, “risk-concentrated areas”, and “pulsatile events” that drive their changes. These local, transient, and nonlinear threshold processes often dominate the function and evolution of coastal and estuarine ecosystems. Traditional “mission-oriented” or “undifferentiated census” observations, which ignore this essence, lead to systematic omissions of core processes and key risk signals. Based on this, we propose a fundamental shift in the marine science observation paradigm: from “routine observation-driven alone” to “a combination of routine observation and scientific questions/management goal-driven”. We construct a logical framework of “scientific questions/management goals-key processes-observation requirements”, and systematically expound on three methodological breakthroughs to address the “fluid medium” characteristics of the ocean: building a “dynamic adaptive perception network” to replace fixed grids, establishing “full-chain process analysis” to replace isolated hypothesis testing, and achieving an intelligent closed loop of “real-time assimilation and predictive decision-making”. This study aims to provide a comprehensive theoretical pathway from ontological cognition to methodological practice to build the next generation of “precise, efficient, and applicable” marine science observation systems.

当前海洋观测在数据丰富性与决策有效性之间存在显著脱节。作者认为, 其根源在于指导观测设计的底层逻辑存在“本体论”偏差与“方法论”错配。作者首先审视了将海洋视为空间上均质、时间上渐变的系统的“均匀性预设”, 并基于“陆-海异质性同构”框架, 论证海洋在本质上是一个由关键动态过程主导的异质景观, 其特征表现为“资源富集区”、“风险聚集区”及驱动其变化的“脉冲性事件”。近海与海岸带生态系统的功能与演变, 常由这些局部、短暂且具有非线性阈值效应的过程所主导。传统“任务导向”或“无差别普查”式观测因忽视此本质, 导致对核心过程与关键风险信号的系统性遗漏。基于此, 该文提出海洋科学观测范式的根本转向: 从“单纯例行观测驱动”转向“例行观测与科学问题/管理目标双驱动相结合”。作者构建了“科学问题/管理目标—关键过程—观测需求”的逻辑框架, 并系统阐述了应对海洋“流体介质”特性的三大方法论突破: 构建“动态自适应感知网络”以取代固定网格, 确立“全链条过程解析”以替代孤立的假设检验, 以及实现“实时同化与预测决策”的智能闭环。该文旨在为构建“精准、高效、适用”的下一代海洋科学观测体系, 提供从本体论认知到方法论实践的完整理论路径。

当前海洋观测在数据丰富性与决策有效性之间存在显著脱节。作者认为, 其根源在于指导观测设计的底层逻辑存在“本体论”偏差与“方法论”错配。作者首先审视了将海洋视为空间上均质、时间上渐变的系统的“均匀性预设”, 并基于“陆-海异质性同构”框架, 论证海洋在本质上是一个由关键动态过程主导的异质景观, 其特征表现为“资源富集区”、“风险聚集区”及驱动其变化的“脉冲性事件”。近海与海岸带生态系统的功能与演变, 常由这些局部、短暂且具有非线性阈值效应的过程所主导。传统“任务导向”或“无差别普查”式观测因忽视此本质, 导致对核心过程与关键风险信号的系统性遗漏。基于此, 该文提出海洋科学观测范式的根本转向: 从“单纯例行观测驱动”转向“例行观测与科学问题/管理目标双驱动相结合”。作者构建了“科学问题/管理目标—关键过程—观测需求”的逻辑框架, 并系统阐述了应对海洋“流体介质”特性的三大方法论突破: 构建“动态自适应感知网络”以取代固定网格, 确立“全链条过程解析”以替代孤立的假设检验, 以及实现“实时同化与预测决策”的智能闭环。该文旨在为构建“精准、高效、适用”的下一代海洋科学观测体系, 提供从本体论认知到方法论实践的完整理论路径。

There is a significant disconnection between the richness of data and the effectiveness of decision-making in current marine observation practices. This study argues that the root cause lies in the “ontological” bias and “methodological” mismatch in the logic that guides observation design. We first examine the “uniformity assumption” that views the ocean as a spatially homogeneous and temporally gradual system. Based on the “land-sea heterogeneity isomorphism” framework, we demonstrate that the ocean is essentially a heterogeneous landscape dominated by key dynamic processes, characterized by “resource-rich areas”, “risk-concentrated areas”, and “pulsatile events” that drive their changes. These local, transient, and nonlinear threshold processes often dominate the function and evolution of coastal and estuarine ecosystems. Traditional “mission-oriented” or “undifferentiated census” observations, which ignore this essence, lead to systematic omissions of core processes and key risk signals. Based on this, we propose a fundamental shift in the marine science observation paradigm: from “routine observation-driven alone” to “a combination of routine observation and scientific questions/management goal-driven”. We construct a logical framework of “scientific questions/management goals-key processes-observation requirements”, and systematically expound on three methodological breakthroughs to address the “fluid medium” characteristics of the ocean: building a “dynamic adaptive perception network” to replace fixed grids, establishing “full-chain process analysis” to replace isolated hypothesis testing, and achieving an intelligent closed loop of “real-time assimilation and predictive decision-making”. This study aims to provide a comprehensive theoretical pathway from ontological cognition to methodological practice to build the next generation of “precise, efficient, and applicable” marine science observation systems.

海洋观测能力正经历前所未有的扩张, 高分辨率遥感、生物地球化学、Argo浮标、环境DNA等新技术不断描绘着更细密的海洋图景。然而, 一个深刻的矛盾随之凸显: 尽管积累了海量数据, 但对许多海洋生态系统关键过程、突变阈值和可持续性界限的理解, 仍存在巨大不确定性。科学家与管理者常面临观测数据与决策信息不匹配的困境。这种“数据过载”与“知识稀缺”并存的现象表明, 当前问题的核心已非单纯的“观测不足”, 而在于指导观测设计的根本范式存在系统性局限。
传统的海洋观测体系, 无论技术如何演进, 其设计哲学常深植于一种“空间均匀性”与“时间可平均性”的潜在预设。其经典模式体现为在空间上追求规则网格覆盖, 在时间上遵循固定频率采样。这种模式本质上是“普查思维”的延伸, 其潜在假设是: 通过对一个假定为“均匀场”的系统进行足够多点的标准化测量并求取统计均值, 便能逼近其真实状态。然而, 生态学与复杂性科学已揭示, 诸如海洋这类复杂动态系统, 其宏观行为常由少数关键组分在特定时空窗口的非线性相互作用所主导, 而非所有组分的线性叠加。将适用于“均质平原”的普查方案, 应用于一个内在结构为“峰谷交错”、动态由“脉冲事件”驱动的“异质景观”, 其结果必然是对核心机制与关键风险信号的系统性忽略, 从而产生基于平均值的、“平滑化”的认知偏差(Levin, 1992; Haury et al, 1978)。
本文旨在对观测设计哲学进行系统性反思(图1)。“本体论”指关于存在本质的哲学思考, 具体到本文, 即指导观测设计的、对海洋系统的根本认知(视其为均质或异质)是否成立。唯有首先确立“海洋是异质动态系统”这一本体论认知, 一切以“解决具体问题”为驱动的观测设计方法论——包括之前提出的管理目标导向模型, 以及本文将构建的、更具普适性的“科学问题/管理目标—关键过程—观测需求”框架——才具备坚实的理论基础。因此, 本文旨在构建一个从本体论反思到方法论重构的完整逻辑体系, 为面向具体问题的精准观测设计提供统一的理论起点。
然而, 我们必须清醒认识到, 海洋观测面临一项比陆地观测更为根本的挑战。在陆地, 地形与河流网络构成了相对稳定的空间结构, 生态过程如同“功能”在其上演变。而在海洋, 流体介质自身处于持续的运动、变形与重组之中——海流搬运着性质各异的水团, 中尺度涡旋生消移动, 层化结构随季节建立与消散。这意味着, 海洋的“物理结构”本身就是一个剧烈变化的“动态过程”。我们所要观测的, 是一个“物理场”与“生物地球化学过程”深度耦合、协同演变的、缺乏固定空间参照的流动整体。这种“本体性”的流动与多变, 使得任何将陆地“静态测绘”思维简单移植的尝试都必然失效。正视这一根本困难, 是进行任何有效方法论重构的前提。尽管海洋在流体运动上具有更强的动态性, 但陆地与海洋生态系统在空间异质性、过程脉冲性及观测逻辑上具有深刻的“结构-功能”相似性。陆地景观的异质格局、脉冲事件与目标导向观测原则, 可为我们破除海洋均匀性预设、重构精准观测范式提供有益的认知参照。
观测始于认知。必须摒弃将海洋视为“均匀流体”的简化模型, 转而建立一种更贴近其生态现实的本体论认知。陆地生态系统的异质性特征, 为此提供了直观的认知参照。
我们生活在陆地, 对脚下大地的四季更迭、山川异质有着切身感知。本系列图画通过同一片虚构山地景观在不同季节的呈现, 以及在不同观测哲学指导下的布点策略, 为我们理解海洋那不可见的、动态的异质性, 提供了一面最直观的“认知之镜”。
传统的“均质性幻象”将导致观测设计与系统本质的严重脱节。这种脱节并非抽象概念, 图2a~2c为此提供了直观例证: 在面对一个由山峰、河谷、平原镶嵌而成的复杂山地系统时, 均质网格如何浪费资源并错失关键。相反, 当我们承认系统的异质性并围绕具体问题(如预测桃花物候、预警山洪风险)设计观测时, 方案将发生根本性转变(图2d~2e)。这标志着从“普查”到“侦查”的哲学转向, 并自然引向一个更具普适性的设计框架。
在海洋科学中, 长期主导的是一种 “均质性”预设。它(在理念上)将海洋视为一个组分均匀混合、性质连续渐变、统计上平稳的系统。例如, 在空间上, 在中国近海开展的传统大面调查, 基于经纬度网格在调查海域平均设置调查站点, 开展无差别调查, 并进行简化的均值计算; 在时间上, 长期选择2、5、8、11月等季度性调查时间, 甚至是年际调查, 获得长期平均数据。这类传统调查追求空间上的均匀覆盖和时间上的规则采样, 相信通过获取足够多的、有代表性的“点”的平均值, 便可以无限逼近区域的“面”的真实状态。其核心目标是降低噪声, 获取稳定的区域平均估计。
然而, 越来越多的证据表明, 海洋生态系统遵循的是一种“异质性”逻辑。在这里, “异质性”并非指简单的“有差异”, 而是指: 系统的关键属性(如能量、物质、生物量)在空间上呈非连续的、斑块化的“镶嵌体”分布, 存在显著的高值“峰”和低值“谷”; 在时间上呈非线性的、脉冲式的“突变节律”变化, 存在短暂而剧烈的关键窗口。系统的行为、功能与命运, 在渐变(广阔区域的缓慢平均)到一定量值的基础上, 恰恰主要由这些局部的极端值(峰与谷)和瞬时的突变过程(脉冲)所主导和控制。基于此, 观测的核心目标就必须从“获取平均值”转向“捕捉极端值”和“解析关键过程”。表1概括了这两种本体论预设所衍生的截然不同的科学意象与观测逻辑。
如同陆地山地系统中的资源富集区与生态脆弱区, 海洋同样存在以局部极值主导的空间格局。陆地的高生产力区与生态灾害易发区, 对应于海洋的“资源富集区”(如上升流高生产力区、渔场聚集中心)和“风险聚集区”(如底层缺氧区、污染汇聚区、低生物多样性带)。广阔的背景海域则类似于陆地的平均背景区。两者的共同特征是: 系统的生产力上限与生态风险下限, 主要由这些局部、短暂的极值状态所决定, 而非大范围的平均状态。
如同陆地的河流、生态廊道构成物质与生物输移的关键路径, 不同的植被类型构成功能斑块; 海洋中的海流、锋面、中尺度涡旋同样是水团、营养盐、浮游生物、幼虫与污染物迁移的关键“廊道”, 而不同水团属性、生物群落区则构成生态“斑块”。系统的连通性与整体功能, 依赖于对这些结构性要素的准确识别, 均匀布点无法有效解析其动态边界与通量(Haury et al, 1978; Dickey et al, 2005; Mahadevan, 2016)。
如同陆地存在土壤层、植被冠层与近地大气层的垂直分异, 海洋在温度、盐度、密度及化学要素上形成强烈的垂直分层结构(如真光层、温跃层、海底边界层), 各层构成迥异的生境。系统的关键界面过程(如物质交换、能量传递)多发生于这些垂直梯度剧烈变化的层区, 忽略垂直结构将直接丢失控制核心生态过程的信息(Cullen, 2015)。
海洋生态过程的变化常呈现强烈的脉冲特征和物候节律。
春季藻华、台风过境、河流洪峰输入等过程, 可在短时间内(数天至数周)剧烈改变系统状态与物质通量。
重要经济鱼类的产卵、浮游幼虫的索饵、生物的季节性洄游等生命史阶段, 构成了其对环境变化最为敏感和脆弱的时期, 也是决定种群补充成功与否的关键窗口。
陆地-海洋的类比不仅在于结构的相似, 更在于其生态功能的非线性特征。任何异质性要素的生态效应都具有“双重性”与“阈值依赖性”, 其性质由具体的“强度”、“位置”与“时机”共同决定, 存在从“有利”转向“有害”的临界阈值。
适度的生产力高峰是维持食物网的基础, 但过度的、短时暴发的初级生产(如有害藻华)则可能转化为消耗氧气、产生毒素的生态灾害。
底层低氧区在垂直混合良好的季节可能影响有限, 但在夏季强层化条件下, 可在短时间内迅速发展, 导致底栖生物大量死亡, 成为“生态陷阱”。
环境状况长期缓慢的变化, 潜移默化地影响着生物的生存, 在传统监测稀疏观测中常被理解为随机波动的“背景场”。而当量变不断积累, 环境条件越过阈值发生质变突变, 则可能在短时间内引起生态系统的剧烈变化。例如, 关键营养盐在生产力高峰期的瞬时限制, 虽可能范围小、时间短, 却足以强烈抑制当季的初级生产总量, 成为制约生态系统功能的“隐性瓶颈”。
海洋生态系统的健康、生产力和风险, 并非仅由其大范围“背景场”的平均状态决定, 而常常是主要由编码在那些局部“极值”是否跨越生态阈值, 以及这些极值发生在“何时”与“何处”的时空信息之中。传统观测用时空平均“平滑”掉的, 恰恰是这些决定系统状态与命运的关键信号。
陆地与海洋的类比虽极具启发性, 但我们必须认识到一个使海洋观测变得无比复杂的根本性差异。在陆地, 山脉、河流、平原的格局是相对固定的, 构成了生态过程上演的静态“舞台”; 气候变化与生物活动是在此舞台上变动的“演员”。观测的核心是捕捉“演员”的动态。
然而, 在海洋, “舞台”本身即是流动的、变化的“主演”之一。海水介质永不停歇的运动, 意味着:
高生产力的上升流区、致命的低氧水团、赤潮斑块、中尺度涡旋等关键“景观要素”本身会移动、生消、变形。昨天的“观测峰”可能已是今天的“背景平原”。
物理流动(如洋流、层化)直接驱动化学物质(如营养盐、溶解氧)的分布, 并瞬间影响生物(如浮游植物、鱼类)的聚集与迁移。物理场、化学场、生物场的变化高度同步、互为因果(Martin, 2003)。
在固定地理坐标进行的观测, 其数据可能源于不同水团或生态系统的“路过”, 而非同一系统的“演变”。这动摇了传统“时间序列”分析的基础假设。
因此, 海洋的本质是一个“流动的异质景观”。这不仅意味着我们要观测“峰”与“谷”, 更意味着我们要在波涛中追踪移动的“峰”, 在暗流下定位游荡的“谷”, 并在它们彼此耦合、快速演变的动态中, 解析其生命史与影响力。这构成了海洋观测在“异质性”和“脉冲性”挑战之上的第三重, 也是最根本的挑战: 流动性与强耦合性。承认这一点, 是我们任何方法论设计不能绕过的出发点。
基于上述本体论认知, 观测的方法论必须进行根本性重构。面向具有高度变异性和时空异质性的海洋典型科学问题, 特别是较小时空尺度生态过程研究时, 观测不应再是目标模糊的“定期普查”, 而应实施目的明确的“精准侦查”, 构建科学适用的海洋观测体系。我们提出“科学问题/管理目标—关键过程—观测设计(SPOD)”逻辑框架, 并系统阐述其实践路径。
SPOD框架的提出, 正是为了应对“流动的异质景观”这一根本属性。一个清晰的科学问题(如“黄海冷水团如何影响夏季鱼群分布?”)或管理目标(如“预警浒苔绿潮的登陆”), 其价值在于它能为我们在流动的混沌中, 锁定必须追踪的核心实体与必须解析的关键过程。问题定义了我们要追踪的“移动目标”和要理解的“耦合机制”。
观测设计的逻辑起点必须是一个清晰的、具体的科学问题或管理目标。例如: “海洋热浪如何影响某经济鱼类幼体的存活与补充过程?”或“如何预警并量化养殖区夏季底层缺氧灾害的规模与持续时间?”目标是所有后续设计的锚点。
识别与驱动目标直接关联的核心生态、物理或生物地球化学过程, 并明确这些过程发生的关键空间位置、典型时间尺度与持续时间。过程的速率决定了所需的最低观测频率, 过程的空间结构特征决定了必需的观测分辨率。
根据关键过程解析出的时空分辨率与要素需求, 针对性地配置观测平台、传感器和采样策略。摒弃“一刀切”的固定网格, 采用灵活、可组合的观测手段。
为应对海洋“流体介质”动态变化的根本挑战, 必须在以下3个维度实现范式突破。
应对“舞台”的流动性, 固定网格必然失效。必须建立一种能感知、追踪、聚焦移动目标的智能网络。“机动感知层”的核心使命, 就是作为追踪器, 对移动的涡旋、输运的水团、发展的赤潮进行自适应跟踪观测。“触发-追逐”机制的本质, 是网络对流动系统中突发“特征信号”的智能响应与聚焦。
应对“强耦合性”, 孤立变量的观测毫无意义。必须实施“时空同步、多要素协同”的观测。当追踪一个低氧水团时, 必须同步测量其物理结构(温度、盐度、流速剖面)、化学消耗(溶解氧、营养盐、pH)及生物响应(底栖生物存活率、微生物群落)。唯有如此, 才能解析这个“移动死亡谷”的形成、维持与消散机制, 而非仅仅记录其存在。
应对“快速变化”, 滞后数据价值锐减。必须建立与变化速度相匹配的“感知-理解-预见”闭环。实时同化: 是将流动的、非均匀的观测数据, 快速融合进一个能表征“流动舞台”的数学模型(如高分辨率环流-生态耦合模型)的唯一途径。模型反哺观测是让数学模型这个“数字孪生体”预测移动目标的未来状态, 并智能引导实体观测资源前往最关键位置进行验证与加密, 从而在流动的现实中掌握主动。此闭环的终极目标, 是获得预见性。例如当观测赤潮生消、低氧区动态变化过程及其生态效应时, 不仅能描述已经发生的赤潮, 更能预测其发展轨迹; 不仅能测量当前的缺氧, 更能预警其潜在危害。
海洋观测正处在一个关键的范式抉择路口。继续沿袭“均匀普查”思路单纯增加数据量, 只会加剧“数据冗余”而无法显著提升“认知深度”与“决策效能”, 必须系统性地转向“问题驱动、过程匹配、智能敏捷”的新范式。
这一范式的核心在于根本的认知转变: 海洋是一个“物理场”与“生态过程”深度耦合、协同演变的异质动态系统。对其有效的观测, 必须像针对特定病理机制进行精准诊断, 而非执行无差别的全面体检。观测方案应是围绕具体的科学问题或管理目标“衍生”出来的、高度定制化的“科学侦查”方案。
实现这一转变是一项系统工程。它要求资助体系从支持常规“观测任务/航次”转向支持以“重大科学问题与创新解决方案”为导向的研究; 要求技术体系深度交叉融合, 构建天-空-海-底一体化、具备协同与自适应能力的“智能海洋感知网络”; 要求数据体系向以“科学问题/管理目标-数据-知识-决策”为核心关联的开放、智能信息生态系统转型。
综上所述, 海洋科学观测的范式革命, 肇始于对“均匀性幻象”的批判, 深化于对“异质动态景观”的认知, 并最终锚固于对“流动的异质景观”这一根本属性的把握。我们提出的SPOD框架及其三大方法论突破, 是一个内在统一的整体: 它要求观测体系像一位兼具战略眼光与战术敏捷性的“侦探”, 在浩瀚的流动世界中, 首先明确“案件”(科学问题/管理目标), 随后敏锐地识别“线索”与“嫌疑人”(关键过程与要素), 并调动所有“侦查手段”(动态感知矩阵)进行追踪、取证(全链条解析), 最终通过“案情重建”(模型同化与预测)揭示真相, 甚至预判下一幕。
这条路充满挑战, 但方向已然清晰: 未来的海洋观测, 必将是一个与海洋本身一样动态、智能、适应性的共融式认知系统。这不仅是技术进步, 更是人类以谦卑和智慧, 与这个星球上最宏大、最活跃的生命支持系统展开的一场深度对话。
