Health assessments of marine ecosystems rely heavily on the real-time diagnosis of biological status and functions. However, the “cognitive lag” of traditional biological observation (i.e., the long period from sample collection to species identification and data output, which makes it difficult to reflect rapid changes in the ecosystem promptly) has become the core bottleneck for the operational application of health assessment. This article systematically analyzes the historical roots and contemporary predicaments of this bottleneck, pointing out that it stems from “technological path dependence”, “verification logic paradox”, and “observation network absence”. To break through this predicament, this article proposes a new biological observation paradigm that will enable the shift from “lagging evidence collection to real-time diagnosis”. This paradigm includes three core dimensions: at the cognitive level, it will survey the “complete species set”, track the “functional fingerprints”, and identify key ecological function signals; at the technical level, it will construct a “real-time perception-quality control verification” collaborative technical system, integrate cutting-edge measures such as environmental DNA, in situ imaging, and intelligent acoustics, and innovatively iterate the verification mode; at the network level, through the development of modular intelligent biological sensing modules, it will embed biological sensing capabilities in the global observation network in an “plug-and-play” manner, achieving automated and continuous perception of biological signals. This paradigm shift aims to upgrade biological observations to a forward-looking information infrastructure that supports real-time health diagnoses and early warnings regarding marine ecosystems.

海洋生态系统健康评估高度依赖于对生物状态与功能的实时诊断, 然而, 传统生物观测的“认知滞后性”——从样本获取到物种鉴定、数据产出的漫长周期难以及时反映生态系统的快速变化, 诊断滞后性成为健康评估业务化应用的核心瓶颈。文章系统剖析了这一瓶颈的历史根源与当代困境, 指出其源于“技术路径依赖”、“校验逻辑悖论”与“观测网络缺位”的三重锁定。为突破困局, 该文提出从“滞后取证”转向“实时诊断”的生物整合观测新范式。该范式包含3个核心维度: 在认知层面, 从普查“物种全集”聚焦到追踪“功能指纹”, 识别关键生态功能信号; 在技术层面, 构建 “实时感知-质控验证”协同技术体系, 融合环境DNA、原位成像、智能声学等前沿手段, 并创新迭代校验模式; 在网络层面, 通过研发模块化智能生物感知模块, 将生物感知能力以“即插即用”方式嵌入全球观测网, 实现生物信号的自动化、连续化感知。这一范式转变旨在将生物观测从滞后的科研活动, 升级为支撑海洋生态系统实时健康诊断与早期预警的前瞻性信息基础设施。

Health assessments of marine ecosystems rely heavily on the real-time diagnosis of biological status and functions. However, the “cognitive lag” of traditional biological observation (i.e., the long period from sample collection to species identification and data output, which makes it difficult to reflect rapid changes in the ecosystem promptly) has become the core bottleneck for the operational application of health assessment. This article systematically analyzes the historical roots and contemporary predicaments of this bottleneck, pointing out that it stems from “technological path dependence”, “verification logic paradox”, and “observation network absence”. To break through this predicament, this article proposes a new biological observation paradigm that will enable the shift from “lagging evidence collection to real-time diagnosis”. This paradigm includes three core dimensions: at the cognitive level, it will survey the “complete species set”, track the “functional fingerprints”, and identify key ecological function signals; at the technical level, it will construct a “real-time perception-quality control verification” collaborative technical system, integrate cutting-edge measures such as environmental DNA, in situ imaging, and intelligent acoustics, and innovatively iterate the verification mode; at the network level, through the development of modular intelligent biological sensing modules, it will embed biological sensing capabilities in the global observation network in an “plug-and-play” manner, achieving automated and continuous perception of biological signals. This paradigm shift aims to upgrade biological observations to a forward-looking information infrastructure that supports real-time health diagnoses and early warnings regarding marine ecosystems.

健康的海洋生态系统是全球可持续发展的蓝色基石, 这已在联合国可持续发展目标14 (Sustainable Development Goal 14, SDG 14)及“海洋科学促进可持续发展十年”(2021~2030)等全球议程中成为核心共识。然而, 联合国《第二次全球海洋评估报告》(The Second World Ocean Assessment, WOA II)揭示, 海洋正面临生物多样性丧失、渔业资源过度开发等多重压力, 对其实施精准、动态的管理已刻不容缓。对海洋健康状况的准确与及时评估, 是实施基于生态系统的管理、保护生物多样性、保障海洋经济可持续发展的决策前提。然而, 一个根本性的悖论在于: 管理决策需要的是对生态系统, 特别是其生物群落结构与功能动态的、近乎实时的诊断与预警, 而现有科学体系所能提供的, 却常常是严重滞后、片段化的历史生物“取证”报告——甚至作为决策基础的权威评估报告本身, 也受制于此类滞后数据。这种“生物信息赤字”与“认知滞后性”, 使得当前的海洋健康评估多停留在“事后归因”层面, 难以实现“事前预警”和“过程干预”。
传统的海洋生物调查为认识海洋中的生物、捕捉海洋生物的长期变化奠定了不可磨灭的研究基石, 然而我们面对的是变化中的海洋, 随着海洋管理对海洋状态信息需求紧迫性的提高, 传统的海洋调查方法已难以满足评估、预测、预警、预报对时效性的要求。一次普通的海洋生态系统调查航次, 其基于物种鉴定和群落分析的生态数据, 往往在考察结束后数月才能产出; 而面对生态灾害预警、渔业资源管理或养殖容量评估等紧迫需求, 同样需要历经漫长的周期才能获得“权威”诊断, 致使决策者屡屡错失最佳干预窗口。究其根本, 在于传统的海洋生物观测范式——以船舶考察、拖网采样、实验室分析为核心——其工作周期与生态过程的变化速率严重脱节。因此, 如何打破生物观测的滞后性困境, 构建能够匹配生态系统动态变化的实时诊断体系, 已成为海洋科学与管理领域亟待突破的战略性瓶颈。本文旨在系统诊断这一瓶颈的深层根源, 并提出以“生物整合观测”为核心的范式变革路径与系统性解决方案。
引言中揭示的“实时性需求”与“滞后性现实”间的根本矛盾并非偶然, 而是深植于传统海洋生物观测范式内在逻辑的必然结果。本文所称的“滞后性陷阱”, 特指在传统海洋生物观测范式下, 由技术路径依赖、方法周期漫长与系统协作低效共同导致的、认知产出严重落后于生态实况且难以自我革新的系统性困境。本节旨在系统诊断这一瓶颈问题, 通过历史回顾与现状剖析, 揭示其形成的深层机制。首先, 我们将通过科学史上的里程碑式项目, 追溯“认知滞后”现象的历史根源与模式; 进而, 以当代开放科学实践与全球数据现状为镜, 审视其造成的现实困境; 最后, 从技术、方法与系统3个层面, 剖析导致这一困境难以自我突破的系统性锁定机制, 从而为探寻范式突破路径奠定清晰的问题框架。
海洋生物认知的每一次飞跃, 几乎都伴随着漫长的数据“消化”期。被誉为现代海洋学起点的“挑战者”号全球考察(1872~1876年), 其海上作业历时3.5年, 而全部50卷科学报告的整理与出版却耗时长达19年(Government, 1890)。这一历程深刻揭示了经典范式下样本获取与知识产出之间的巨大时间鸿沟。我国1958~1961年的全国海洋综合调查, 其生物样本的分析整理与研究报告的出版工作延续了数十年。大量样本所蕴含的分类与生态信息, 至今仍未得到完全解读。这与“挑战者”号的历程共同表明, 在传统观测范式下, 样本的获取速度远超于知识的转化速度, 导致我们对海洋生物的认识长期处于“欠账”状态。即便是21世纪初动员全球力量、旨在绘制首幅全球海洋生命全景图的“国际海洋生物普查计划”(Census of Marine Life, CoML, 2000~2010), 其历程亦深刻反映了这一范式瓶颈(OʼDor et al, 2005)。该项目汇聚了来自80余个国家、2 700多名科学家, 历时十年, 分析了逾3 000万条观测记录, 并进行了大量的补充调查(图1), 最终将其核心成果《海洋生命》呈现于世。这一宏大工程对历史数据进行了大规模汇编、校验与综合。然而, 当我们终于获得这张宝贵的“基线”图谱时(图 2), 其所描述的海洋生物多样性与分布格局, 已发生了新的、未被此图谱记录的变化, 因为海洋一直处于变化之中, 海洋中的生物也一直处于变化之中。这标志着, 即便是在全球协作的巅峰水平上, 以“考察-采样-鉴定-汇编”为核心的经典范式, 其最终产出仍是严重滞后的、静态的历史归纳, 这是坚实的背景证据、历史基线, 但却无法满足管理决策对生物群落实时动态与趋势预警的信息需求。所以CoML科学计划执行委员会专家组建议今后的工作应该充分考虑变化海洋环境下的海洋生物(Life in a changing ocean)的观测问题。
在倡导数据快速共享的今天, 生物观测的“认知滞后性”在当前的一些海洋调查中也显露出来。一个典型例证是我国国家自然科学基金委的共享航次: 截至2023年已执行140个开放航次(其中渤黄海、长江口、东海海区航次42个, 本研究中采用数据资料涉及航段89个), 积累了海量观测资料1。但据此构建的开放数据库中, 高质量数据集仍高度集中于温盐深、营养盐、叶绿素等理化与基础生物参数。相比之下, 能提供浮游动物、鱼类和底栖生物等类群物种组成与丰度信息的标准化数据集则极为稀缺; 在这89个航段中, 仅有 16个航段附带有少量生物数据, 且其中完全缺失鱼类等关键高营养级生物的数据。这一数据失衡的格局在全球尺度上同样显著。根据国际权威的世界海洋数据库(World Ocean Database, WOD) 的统计, 在其实测剖面数据记录中, 生物要素数据占比仅为4.64%, 且绝大部分为叶绿素数据, 与物理海洋学要素(84.53%)和化学要素(10.83%)的数据体量形成了巨大差距(图 3)。这清晰地表明, 涉及生物多样性、群落结构与功能的数据, 是现代海洋观测体系中最为薄弱的环节。
此外, 多种海洋健康评估指数和方法已在局部海域建立。例如应用于波罗的海的HELCOM体系、比斯开湾的MSFD体系、海洋OHI指数等, 尤其是OHI指数已被应用于全球220个沿海国家和地区的海洋健康评估, 也有11个区域尺度的应用案例, 例如对美国西海岸地区(包括华盛顿、俄勒冈和加利福尼亚)的评估(Borja et al, 2016)。以OHI评估渔业资源为例, 其“食物供给”目标主要关注总渔获量与最大可持续产量的差距。然而, 这种评估存在显著滞后性。例如, 2025年发布的指数反映的是2023年甚至更早的数据。在此期间, 局部海域可能已因过度捕捞或环境突变导致关键鱼类种群崩溃, 但指数无法及时示警。这种宏观、滞后的评估虽然有助于国际比较和政策方向定位, 但对于需要实时数据、精准干预的海洋生物多样性保护和种群恢复管理而言, 指导作用有限。这种失衡并非源于航次未进行生物采样, 其根源在于: 传统生物样品繁复的处理、鉴定与分析流程无法在航次周期内完成, 更无法匹配数据快速发布与共享的时效要求。其直接后果是, 基于此类开放数据流的研究, 虽能精细刻画海洋环境场的实时变化, 却难以同步揭示生物群落的结构性与功能性响应, 致使对“生态系统健康”的动态评估失去了最核心的依据。
当前困境并非单一技术落后所致, 而是经典观测范式在技术路径、质控逻辑与系统演进上陷入了一种难以自我突破的系统性锁定状态。
以“采样-固定-鉴定-计数”为核心的传统流程, 其权威性建立在细致的形态分类学基础上, 但这也决定了其劳动密集型、流程不可压缩的本质。它如同一个精密但缓慢的手工车间, 无法适配生态系统变化的高频节奏, 形成了效率的天花板。
新兴快速技术(如环境DNA、水下成像、水声学)为突破效率瓶颈带来了希望, 但它们普遍面临 “校验悖论”: 其数据解读与定量化依赖于传统方法提供的“基准数据”, 而后者自身的滞后性又制约了前者的快速认证与业务化应用, 形成了互为前提的相互掣肘。
全球及国家的业务化海洋观测系统(如Argo浮标阵列、锚系观测网、水下滑翔机)已能全天候获取高时空分辨率的物理、化学数据流。然而, 由于缺乏可靠的可长期自动化运行的标准化生物传感模块, 导致物理化学场与生物场的观测在时空上严重脱节。生物动态因而成为这个庞大观测网络中的“感知暗箱”, 我们能够监测海洋的“体温”与“血液成分”, 却无从实时感知其“生命的脉搏”。
为彻底跨越从“滞后取证”到“实时诊断”的鸿沟, 必须发起一场观测范式的根本性变革。本文提出, 破局之道在于确立 “生物整合观测”新范式。该范式并非单一技术的革新, 而是一个系统性框架, 其强大效力源于认知、技术、网络3个维度的深度整合与协同支撑。下文将逐一阐释这三大支柱如何重构海洋生物观测的全局逻辑。
实时诊断必须摒弃“监测一切”的理想化思维。范式转变的第一步, 是推动观测目标从建立完备的“物种名录”, 转向追踪能表征生态系统核心运行状态的 “功能指纹”。这建立在生态学“功能群”与“关键种”理论之上, 其实现路径是一个科学降维的过程。
依据“有用、有效、够用”原则, 将具体管理目标(如评估总体健康、预警藻华、评估养殖容量)解构为待诊断的少数核心生态过程问题(如能量传递效率、营养级结构稳定性、有机污染负荷)。
针对每个核心过程问题, 基于生态学机制, 从“功能群”与“关键种”视角, 筛选对其变化最敏感、最具诊断特异性的生物指示组分及其核心功能性状(如浮游动物粒径谱、鱼类平均营养级、底栖群落耐污指数)。这些关键性状的组合, 即构成该生态过程的“功能指纹”。
通过上述整合, 观测的生物学维度得以从数以万计的物种实体, 降维至数十个可量化、机制明确的核心功能信号。这不仅是观测负担的大幅减轻, 更是认知层次的跃升, 为后续技术整合中的高效传感与智能解译奠定了理性基础(Violle et al, 2007)。
为实现对“功能指纹”的实时感知, 必须在技术层面构建一套全新的协同工作体系, 该体系包含紧密联动的3个部分。
确立以环境DNA(eDNA)宏条形码、高通量原位成像(如流式成像、视频剖面仪)、多频声学、生物光学传感器等为核心的实时/准实时观测技术链。它们能够在原位、连续、自动化地获取生物存在、丰度、形态与行为等原始信号, 形成高频数据流, 是响应动态变化的“前沿哨兵”(Thomsen et al, 2015; Ushio et al, 2018)。
为破解“校验悖论”, 必须创新验证模式。我们提出 “周期性基准航次”的概念, 其核心目标并非逐一验证每个瞬时信号, 而是通过精心设计的同步综合采样, 系统性建立并动态更新一个 “区域生物特征-信号关联数据库”。该数据库将eDNA序列、声学散射模型、影像形态特征、物种功能性状与传统分类学信息进行关联, 为实时感知技术提供不断优化的“解译辞典”与定量校准系数, 是保证数据质量的“校准基石”(Tanhua et al, 2019)。
利用人工智能与机器学习, 开发自动化的图像/声纹分类、多源数据融合与异常检测算法。该引擎能够实时处理“感知模块”的原始数据流, 并调用“关联数据库”进行实时比对、校准与信息提取, 最终直接输出标准化、可解释的 “功能指纹”指标集, 完成从原始信号到生态知识的转化。
真正的实时诊断要求生物观测从依赖离散的科研航次, 升级为网络化、业务化的连续感知。其核心路径是将标准化的生物感知能力, 以“即插即用”的模块化方式, 深度集成到现有的全球海洋观测基础设施之中, 从而为其系统性地赋能, 形成为整个网络所共享的一层 “生物感知能力”。
研发低功耗、小型化、标准化的 “智能生物感知模块”。该模块作为核心载体, 可集成微型高清成像单元、eDNA原位富集与保存单元、多光谱生物光学传感器等, 其设计目标是以统一的接口和通信协议, 成为可便捷加装至Argo浮标、水下滑翔机、长期锚系等各类主流观测平台上的“通用插件”, 实现即插即用与数据融合。
此种深度集成将重塑观测网络的智能。例如, 一个搭载该模块的剖面浮标, 在自主检测到叶绿素荧光异常脉冲与特定有害藻华指示物种的eDNA信号激增时, 可自动触发成像单元进行加密拍摄, 并将包含可疑生物图像、关联生物光学参数及同步温盐数据的综合信息包, 通过卫星实时回传, 直接触发生态灾害的早期预警, 实现从“环境数据记录”到“生态事件诊断”的跨越。
自 2010 年开始, 联合国教科文组织政府间海洋学委员会(Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission, IOC)一直推进全球海洋范围内加强对海洋生物的观测, 建设全球海洋观测系统(Global Ocean Observing System, GOOS), 从长期主要感知海洋的“物理-化学状态”, 向能够同步、连续感知“生命动态”的完整神经系统演进(图 4), 通过为庞大的观测网络植入标准化的“生物感官”, 将系统性地弥补其在实时生态诊断与早期预警方面的最关键能力缺失, 我们期待包含生物传感器的综合观测系统能够尽早成为现实, 使海洋健康的“脉搏”得以被持续感知。
“生物整合观测”新范式从理论到业务化运行, 需依赖跨学科、跨部门的系统性能力建设。这不仅是技术研发, 更是知识体系、标准与协同机制的创新。建议优先从以下3个相互关联的层面协同推进。
建议设立专项, 系统解构我国近海与关键大洋区域的典型生态系统(如河口、养殖区、珊瑚礁、陆架海), 筛选并量化其核心“功能指纹”。计划核心包括: 建立中国海关键生物类群(如中华哲水蚤、关键鱼类、指示性底栖生物)的功能性状数据库; 通过受控实验与现场观测, 明确关键功能性状对主要环境胁迫(如升温、酸化、缺氧、富营养化)的响应阈值与机制; 最终构建 “功能指纹-生态健康状态”定量评估模型。该计划将为“认知整合”提供不可或缺的本土化知识库与诊断标准。
推动建立实体与虚拟结合的国家级平台, 其核心使命是破解“校验悖论”、加速技术成熟。平台应对eDNA、水下成像、声学、生物光学等新兴感知技术, 开展系统性、周期性的平行比对测试与性能评估, 建立各类技术信号的标准化解读流程与不确定性量化方法。核心产出包括: 面向不同生态指标的最佳技术实践指南、标准化的生物观测数据产品规范, 以及开放的区域生物特征-信号关联参考数据集。该平台是连接前沿技术研发与业务化应用的“转换器”与“质量关口”。
为极大扩展观测的时空覆盖与社会基础, 应规范发展公民科学。通过开发专用移动应用、提供简易识别工具与标准化协议, 系统培训并动员渔民、潜水员、养殖户、海上平台工作人员等成为合格的“群众观察员”。其收集的关于生物出现(如珍稀物种、赤潮、水母)、异常事件、物候变化等图文信息, 经平台审核与地理标注后, 可形成宝贵的辅助观测数据集。该网络不仅是专业网络的有效补充, 更是提升公众海洋意识、构建社会共治格局的重要纽带。
海洋生态系统健康评估要从愿景落地为可操作、可预警的管理工具, 必须克服生物信息严重滞后这一核心瓶颈。本文系统论证, 传统观测范式虽然在海洋生物普查领域提供了不可替代的海量资料和历史证据, 但是仍在技术效率、校验逻辑与系统集成3个维度上形成了难以自我突破的“三重锁定”。
破局之道在于发起一场深刻的范式革命, 即转向以“生物整合观测”为核心的新范式。这一范式通过三重整合实现系统性重构:
(1) 在认知层面, 通过整合生态学理论与管理需求, 将目标从“物种全集”降维至“功能指纹”, 实现了观测任务的理性聚焦。
(2) 在技术层面, 通过构建“实时感知-质控验证”协同体系, 打破了“校验悖论”, 为快速、可靠的数据生产提供了双轨制解决方案。
(3) 在网络层面, 通过推动模块化“生物感知能力”嵌入全球观测基础设施, 使持续、自动化的生命信号感知成为可能, 补齐了实时诊断的最后一块拼图(Karr, 1981; Borja et al, 2000; Miloslavich et al, 2018)。
这远非一次单纯的技术迭代, 而是海洋观测哲学从静态、离线的“生命名录编目” 向动态、在线的“生命过程感知” 的根本性转变。推动并实现这一范式变革, 将使我们首次能够以与物理、化学环境变化同步的节奏, “聆听”海洋生态系统的脉搏, 对其健康状态进行实时诊断与早期预警。这不仅是海洋科学发展的内在需求, 更是应对全球变化、实现海洋可持续治理与保护, 所必须构建的前瞻性决策支持能力。未来的工作应聚焦于上述支撑体系的建设, 并在典型海域开展示范, 逐步将这一新范式转化为守护蓝色家园的常规力量。
