Objective The Wufeng Formation-Longmaxi Formation black rock series in eastern Sichuan and western Hubei is a focus for marine shale gas exploration in South China. These show great differences in sedimentary characteristics, which record major geological events during the Ordovician–Silurian transition. Further knowledge of these differences is of benefit to exploration for shale gas in western Hubei, and helps to understand global paleo-climate and sea-level changes during that time. Methods The sedimentary properties, main influencing factors and sedimentary processes of the black rock series in the Wufeng Formation and Longmaxi Formation were studied in detail by petrological, sedimentological and geochemical analysis. Results The sedimentary attributes of the Wufeng Formation are similar in both study areas, but in the Longmaxi Formation they differ significantly. In eastern Si-chuan, the large thickness of the Longmaxi black shale with completed graptolite zones and thick silty shale in the Rhuddanian-Aeronian transition is overlain by thick, organic-rich shale. Three long-term sedimentary cycles are recognized in the Longmaxi black rock series, but in western Hubei the Longmaxi black shale is very thin and only two long-term sedimentary cycles are identified. Neither silty shale nor Coronograptus cyphus and Demirastrites triangulatus graptolite zones are present in the Rhuddanian-Aeronian transition, but thin lime-bearing dolomitic mudstone covered by thin organic-rich shale are developed. Additionally, the Longmaxi black shale contains less quartz in eastern Sichuan than in western Hubei. Conclusions In this study, tectonic paleogeomorphology and paleoclimate changes are considered to be the main factors influencing the different evolutionary histories of the Wufeng Formation⁃Longmaxi Formation black rock series in the two study areas. During the Upper Ordovician, eastern Sichuan and western Hubei both subsided as a result of the Cathaysia Block⁃Yangtze Block collision. The paleogeomorphology and sedimentary environments in eastern Sichuan and western Hubei are not significantly different, but continuous tectonic compression beginning in the Early Silurian caused non-uniform subsidence. Continuing subsidence in eastern Sichuan and gradual uplift in western Hubei led to significantly different thicknesses of the Rhuddanian black shale in the two regions. Global sea-level fall during the Rhuddanian⁃Aeronian transition related to intensified glaciation further exacerbated the sedimentary differences in the two study areas, resulting in a sedimentary gap in western Hubei and abundant sandy deposits with low TOC in eastern Sichuan. Subsequent significant sea-level rise following global climatic warming promoted the development of black shale in both areas, although thicker in eastern Sichuan than in western Hubei. However, gradually intensifying tectonic compression and gradual sea-level fall, along with sufficient terrigenous sediment supply, sustained a sedimentary environment in both regions that led to the termination of development of the Longmaxi black shale in the two study areas.

目的 川东与鄂西地区五峰组—龙马溪组黑色岩系是我国南方海相页岩气勘探的重点地区,明确两地黑色岩系差异沉积特征及形成机制对于深化奥陶纪—志留纪之交扬子地区古环境与古气候认识,促进鄂西地区页岩气勘探评价具有重要意义。 方法 选取川东焦石坝与鄂西宜昌地区五峰组—龙马溪组典型地质剖面,通过开展岩石学、沉积学与地球化学分析,对两地黑色岩系差异发育特征、主控因素及差异沉积模式进行了综合研究。 结果 川东与鄂西地区五峰组黑色岩系发育特征基本相似,但两地龙马溪组黑色岩系沉积特征差异明显。川东地区龙马溪组黑色富有机质页岩不仅厚度大,笔石序列完整,同时在鲁丹阶—埃隆阶之交发育一套厚层粉砂质页岩,其上被厚层黑色富有机质泥页岩再次覆盖,但川东地区富有机质页岩中石英含量略低。鄂西地区龙马溪组黑色富有机质页岩厚度不仅薄,鲁丹阶—埃隆阶之交也未见粉砂质页岩,而是发育了一套薄层的含灰云质泥岩,且缺失了Coronograptus cyphus笔石带与Demirastrites triangulatus笔石带,含灰云质泥岩之上仅见薄层富有机质页岩。 结论 古构造与古气候变化是控制川东焦石坝与鄂西宜昌地区五峰组—龙马溪组黑色岩系差异发育的主要原因。晚奥陶世,川东焦石坝与鄂西宜昌地区整体以构造沉降为主,两地黑色岩系沉积环境基本相似。志留纪初期,川东地区表现为持续性沉降,而鄂西地区表现为相对隆升,导致两地沉积环境出现明显不同,而鲁丹阶—埃隆阶之交全球性冰川活动增强导致的全球海平面快速下降,进一步扩大了两地黑色岩系的沉积差异,导致鄂西宜昌地区在鲁丹阶—埃隆阶之交出现了沉积间断。至埃隆期,两地地貌的差别进一步使得川东地区黑色岩系的发育终止期晚于鄂西地区,最终导致了两地黑色岩系的显著不同。
